Do the small Sandy's really fit a newborn? (Heavenly)

My sister is pregnant with her first baby and I want to get her a cloth diapering system as a baby gift.  I cloth diapered all my children but never used Sandy's.  I already have 18 diapers (from a WAHM) in size 20-35 lbs that I can give her when the baby is bigger so I thought the Sandy's being 8-20 lbs would be perfect for the first set.  Will they actually fit well on a newborn though?  It is assumed the baby will be over 8 lbs. and she will probably use disposables for the first week or two.  Any input is appreciated!

Hello,

I have not used Sandy's, but I have heard enough about them and other ME diapers to reassure you. I used the One-size diaper from the birth of my son, at 7 pounds, with no problem whatsoever. People who use the Sandy's seem to have the same experience. It LOOKS huge on them and it can make some clothes too small, but it works. You just have to get used to the big bum. If the baby is supposed to be on the larger size and your sister is planning on using disposables in the beginning, I would not worry at all about the Small Sandy's fit. But I'm sure other moms with direct experience will give their opinion as well!

My LO was a tall 7 lbs, I used the XSm Sandy's in bamboo and cotton until she was probably 13 lbs.  I then bought the small bamboo, which she outgrew astonishingly quickly at 17 lbs.  The size of her thighs was really the limiting factor. I am currently sitting here with Fuzzi bunz and a wet lap waiting for my Lg's to arrive!

So for the question would the sm's fit an 8 lb-er? I'd say yes.  The cotton is a bit bulkier than bamboo and would likely fit a bit more snuggly (that's a guess though, I only have bamboo sms).  If I had it to do again, I would probably start with the smalls too. I love the bamboo.

I know that with the bamboo Sms, the Xsm airflow covers fit at first and  took up any "slack".  If your sister's LO is skinny like mine was, a couple of Xsm covers may do the trick until the weight picks up.  Thrifty.

Having used both the OS and the S Sandys, I can assure you that the S Sandys will do a great job from 8 lbs.  I used them both from 6.5 with my preemie, with nary a leak.  That was with S Airflows (don't think you could use the XS cover with cotton, as PP suggested you can do with bamboo because they are that little bit trimmer).  The S Sandys are a little trimmer-looking than the OS on a newborn and are probably a bit more intuitive, so if you already have a larger sized diaper, I would say that the S Sandys would be *perfect*.
