  Washing Instructions?? (KariJenk)
Posted: 11:39:55 am on 1/7/2009 Modified: Never

I browsed the website, and the forum a little and found a couple of suggestions for washing the MEOS and Air Flow Covers , but I wanted to put it out there again...in case there are others who would like to comment on what they do that works well.
I just ordered my diapers today, and I'm so excited for baby to get here and I can use the diapers.
Thanks!!!

Start simple and keep it simple until you have a reason to make a change!  In general, this means that if you dry-pail you do a pre-wash and then a hot wash with very, very little detergent.  Many of us have developed our own routine and you'll see some additives, like vinegar or baking soda, but I wouldn't even go there unless you think that you have a reason to.
I like to wash my covers with regular clothes at lower temps, since they don't need as much cleaning and I think benefit from the gentler treatment.  Until their pee started getting stronger, I was able to just rinse my boys' covers out under the tap and machine-wash only once in a while or when soiled.

Yup, just wanted to totally second everything aavt just said. You'll often (a little more on other diapering forums I find) see all kinds of complicated washing instructions and posts about diaper stink and the millions of things you can do to avoid it or fix it. It can get really overwhelming and worrisome but I just wouldn't go there unless you need to. Just stick to the basics, cold pre-rinse, hot wash with small amount of detergent and maybe an extra rinse just for good measure. Stay away from bleach and fabric softener. Dry on the line to save wear and energy if you feel like it or just throw them in the dryer if you don't.

The only thing I'd like to add is that if you're exclusively breastfeeding you can just put poopy diapers as is in the diaper pail. After that you just do a pre-rinse (just plain cold water) before washing. Exclusively breastfed baby poop is water soluble and hardly stinks so it'll just rinse away and won't stink up your pail.

Karen.
