Hi Mamas.. There are a lot of threads over on DiaperSwappers about the upcoming CPSIA regulations on February 10th... what do you all think? I personally don't know what I'm going to do if I cannot buy/sell/trade my used diapers and childrens clothing. |

| I don't know what to think yet. There is soooo much information and I haven't really read anything concrete. I can only HOPE that it's not true because I also don't know what I would do without being able to buy and sell, especially from the WAHM's. |

Wow, never heard of this before, very strange new law. I mean, I like the theory of protecting kids but....
Honestly though, I can't see how they'd ever in a million years enforce this. How could they ever truly prevent all small businesses and especially individuals from selling their used clothing and such.
Theoretically this is only temporary as eventually all the old 'untested' stuff would be out of circulation (ie in two years chances are that most people will be selling stuff bought *after* the new regulations). But in the meantime this could mean serious trouble for businesses and family alike.
Well, worse comes to worse maybe you could sell them to us Canadians...

It's rather confusing to say the least. Read this link: <A href="http://www.cpsc.gov/about/cpsia/faq/108faq.html">http://www.cpsc.gov/about/cpsia/faq/108faq.html</A>
From what I gather some clothing would be exempt but some wouldn't. This is supposed to apply to "children’s toys or child care articles" but it's not clear what is considered a 'child care article' and what isn't. According to the link socks and shoes are NOT considered child care articles... They say that "A child care article is a consumer product designed or intended by the manufacturer to facilitate sleep or the feeding of children age 3 and younger, or to help such children with sucking or teething." So things like pacifiers, cribs, crib sheets, bibs and pyjamas ARE included. But they don't specify about other articles of clothing or cloth diapers...

I'm just so upset about all the WAHM's and crafters who will now not be able to make their wonderful handmade toys/clothing/etc. They cannot afford the hefty price tag that the lead testing has to offer. Its very sad to see that something that was passed to make things safer is going to negatively effect things that were ALWAYS safe!
Apparently, the law is already passed and will be effective on February 10th. The only way it will change is if it is amended before then. I can only hope.

So I can see requirements saying manufacturers have to certify levels, but how on earth would anyone even begin to regulate WAHMs, etc? And how would I as a consumer even know about this (for good and ill, I guess)? Would places like ebay not be able to have used children's goods? are the police going to shut down garage sales? Wouldn't this really only apply to major manufacturers, etc? |

| I think the most upsetting thing in all of that is that the law was most likely not designed to keep babies safe from lead... Not to be cynical, but I have some doubts about the real motives behind the decisions politicians made. This law was probably pushed by big toy manufacturers (I wonder how many lobbyists Fisher-Price has in Washington) to stop competition from the little guys. |

Yes, places like Ebay will not be able to sell any used children's items, UNLESS it has been tested for lead. CRAZY! Deep down I feel (and hope!) that the law will be amended before February 10th, and that items that were made/manufactured before that date will not be subject to the new ruling.
WAHM's/crafters will only be able to sell items that they have put through lead testing, otherwise they will be in violation of the law.
I too, have some feeling that the big toy manufacturer's were behind some of this.
The sad thing is that a lot of people do not know about this. It has really started getting around the last few weeks here. I just hope there is still enough time to fix the whole mess.

Just like the gov-ment to overreact! Make a law too broad and impossible to enforce, that's the USA way! I didn't expect anything less. It'll get fixed or scrapped. It just might be a while. All us "contraband" illegals will just have to hope we don't get thrown in jail before then! Watch out mamas! They're onto us! |

Whew! It was just amended:

At least the resale portion. |
