Would you spend the $ for a new stash if... (pbresolin)

…your DD was already one year old, you knew you weren’t having any more babies and there was nothing wrong with the stash you already had?  (This is all hypothetical, of course LOL!).  I have all OS unbleached, which I like a lot, but I would love a bamboo stash.  I love the trimness and softness of it.  I know I could probably sell the one I have and put that money towards a new one but still, I’m going to have to pay for some of it.  I also know that there have been some debates as to whether the bamboo material is durable enough to last long enough to get to PT and issues with it, over time, becoming less soft, etc. I’m going back and forth.  Have any opinions that might help me keep or sell?  WWYD?

I think if you can afford it and you really want to do it, then there's nothing wrong with that. Even at a year you probably have at least another year of diapering left, if not two more (none of my children trained before 2 3/4, the twins were even a couple months past their 3rd birthday before I could really say they were reliably dry during the day). And then there's nighttime diapering after that...

That said, you'll definetly lose financially in the end as the diapers you have will surely last all that time and still be able to be sold aftewards. So even if you could likely recoup the costs of new diapers over the use of disposables, you definetly won't recoup the cost of new diapers over the ones you already have.

Maybe take the money you'd spend on the diapers and do something special with it instead of just not spending it? Either something special for yourself (the diapers would have been a 'treat' for you anyway, the baby surely wouldn't notice). Or maybe something special for your daughter? A really special outfit maybe? Or put the money in education savings for later on? Although that said, lots of people 'treat' themselves on things way less practical and way more expensive than a set of cloth diapers!!

It's up to you in the end, I've done exactly what you're thinking of doing so I certainly can't judge! LOL! My first batch of cotton diapers were just fine but I bought all new bamboo OS anyway when the girls were just shy of two years. So I'm even crazier than you are! LOL! Part of me looks back and obviously I know it wasn't the smartest thing to do with my money but it's also not a major regret either...

One thing that I personally wouldn't really factor too much in your decision is the whole 'fear' of bamboo not lasting.... Obviously there's no proof either way, but the fact is that so far there has been no evidence at all that bamboo in general is any less durable than cotton. The new generation of bamboo OS has been around for over a year now with no problems (and that's longer already 6 months longer than the first generation lasted before the problems started appearing).

Karen.

I kindof did that, but I was worried my son would ougrow his OS and we'd have to switch eventually anyway. So when he was 6 months old, I sold off all my unbleached OS(minus 2 for the diaper bag and 4 for Grandma's house). I switched to bamboo Sandy's and think they are great. When my son needs his OS diapers when we are out, I think to myself "Man, I need to sell these off and get bamboo Sandy's instead." I just really like the fit & feel of the bamboo, but the Sandy's are bulkier so the cotton OS and a bamboo Sandy are about the same. So I'd probably be amazed at how trim a bamboo OS is!
I probably would have had to do the switch out anyway, so for me it was just justifying the extra cost of bamboo.
I don't honestly know that I would switch out if I didn't need to.
Heck yes, I would. What am I saying! I know me, if it is something that keeps creeping into my thoughts, then I figure it's important enough to change.
Life is short. Don't regret.
That's my opinion.
I know you were inquiring about size, just be sure they will fit until PT. So you don't go through this again(unless you want to)
Cheers!

I would definitely be tempted.  I'm sure that you would be able to sell your MEOS. Plus if you have a fairly large stash, you may not have to spend much more buying new bamboo Sandys or MEOS because you can get away with less diapers since you LO is older.  I find that when they are smaller, they go through more diapers.  I have about 18 MEOS in my stash now for a 2 yr. old and that's enough to go 3 days between wash.  I do use disposables at night though.  You don't need new covers either, which will save you.  Good luck!

LOL! I knew somebody would tell me to go for it!  I'm still thinking about it though...

To be a wet blanket, bamboo, although lovely and soft, takes longer to dry than the cotton.  I have only one bamboo, but it is markedly slower to dry.  This is more time in your dryer ($$ and environmental considerations) or more time on the line.  The line is obviously the more environmentally friendly option, but then you need to factor in maybe another diaper or to to compensate for increased dry time (if your whole stash is bamboo; if part cotton, you could use the cotton first and the bamboo would be dry by the time you needed them).
I think part of your decision has to come down to why you are using cloth.  If for purely environmental reasons, I think you stick with what you have.  If it's about money, then it will cost you more to get a new stash, but given resale and all, you decide what it's worth to you.  If it's about not having gels, etc., on baby's bottom, it's a wash.  Most of us have a mix of motivations, of course, but maybe approaching it from that way helps?

True it is slower to dry and I would love to start using the line.  Hmmm...something else to consider.

I agree with avvt.  Thinking about the reasons for why you are using cloth may help guide your decision.  I've often had "itches" for different diapers have have occasionally regretted my purchases because I already had plenty of diapers.  That said the ME bamboo diapers are soft and silky.  What about just a couple extra to satisfy your craving?  Or perhaps a couple of bamboo sandy's so you can try both a new fabric and a new style?

Good luck

I think I might try first, as you say, to get a few bamboo Sandy's so I can try the fabric and the new style.  I have 18 diapers right now so adding a few more wouldn't hurt, especially if I want to try to line dry.  Everybody seems to really love their bamboo Sandy's!

Well, if getting a few more diapers would help you be able to line-dry, then it might just be your duty to go for it.  :-)  How about 6 or 7?
I'm not sure how you'd go about figuring out the pay-back period, but I have to believe that if you really did reduce or remove your dryer use, you could probably significantly offset both the financial and environmental cost of some new diapers.
I second getting a handful of the bamboo Sandys if you get some new diapers.  I enjoy having a mix of OS and Sandys, but for me the downside of the Sandys is that they are bulkier than the OS (not much of an issue with DS#2, but it really was with #1, since he _just_ fit into things with the OS).  If you get the style in bamboo you benefit from the trimness of the fabric more, I suspect, than you would in the OS.  Of course, the bamboo Sandys has to be even slower to dry than the bamboo OS . . .

I think 6 more would be perfect.  I have 18 OS now and I'm using about 6-7 per day and wait until I have 6 left before I wash.  That would be pushing it if I wanted to use the line.  But 24 would probably be a good number and also as she gets older she won't use as many, so I'll definitely be able to line dry.  I'm not too concerned about bulk.  We stay home most of the time and if we go out I try to have her wear dresses so it doesn't matter much (we live in the south so it's not terribly cold).

I just did, each child I thought was my last but now, I know this is my last (dh is getting self fixed) this is our forth child and I am 41 years old.  However, I wanted to add some colored sandies to our collection, I wouldn't have did it except I was gonna share diaper cost with my sister who has an older baby, but my little elephant of a boy fits in them right now, he's not yet 20lbs but they look great on him- I had over 24 mother ease diapers, which although thinned in spot are perfectly functional (I love the history that all my babies wore then, and only thing left that my first kids wore) 10 years old- my 4 kids, my girfriends 2 kids and my sisters baby have all worn these!  they look sweet (my original stash was natural colored, thread bare with earthy colored or tie died shirts/ leg warmers/ socks.. they look great

Oh that's sweet.  I'm 41 too!  This is the last baby for sure, but I'm thinking about saving them for the grandchildren (I have an almost 18 year-old!) lol!  I love Mother-ease so much! I didn't get the bamboo.  I ended up ordering more of the unbleached cotton.  I guess I'm just a cotton lover.
