  night time diapers (Ginger)

I've been using Mother Ease one size during the day for my 4 month old son since birth and love them.  But at night we've been using a competing brand that's an all in one (so no extra cover).  While I like the competing brand I don't like how the microfiber stinks come morning.  It's not an ammonia issue, I think it's just a strong urine issue.  At least that's what it smells like.  So now that my son is bigger I want to give our ME a try at night.  How many inserts should I use to keep him dry (and the sheets dry)?

Thanks so much,
Gingerbaby #1 due Sept 25, 2008

I use a OS with one snap in liner for my 1 year old and find it works very well for us.  She's never completely soaked in the morning (although she isn't a heavy wetter anyway) and I have never noticed the smell of urine.  I also use a fleece liner over top of the liner to give a little "stay dry" feeling for the long haul of the night.

Although some babies need additional boosting, I would start with one absorbant liner and move up only if needed.  I have always used ME diapers at night without leaks.  As babies get older, their night diapers will often get stinky, depending on baby and diet, but 4 mos seems awfully young for that; it's usually well into solids and often when baby decreases milk intake, either because of being weaned from the breast or simply because solids are playing a bigger role in diet.  My DS#1 always stank when he'd had cauliflower for dinner, but that was when he was around a year or so.

Yeah, ME makes great diapers & boosters, not to mention bulletproof covers. There's alot of cloth users that use posies for overnights simply because they don't think a cloth diaper could possibly hold that much pee and keep stuff dry. But I have a super-pee-er and he's never once woke up soaked on the outside. But he's been wet from stem to stern on the inside. Like PP said, start with one liner and see how it goes. Move up if need be. Maybe try a cut from scrap or old blankie fleece liner to put in between your baby's bum and the liner to pull away wetness away from his skin since it's for such an long time compared to how often you normally change baby during the day. But that's just if you notice baby's skin is wet and it bothers you or baby.
I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Thank you all so very very much.  After another sleepless night, because DS is teething, it was a welcome site to see replies to my inquiry.  I hope these teeth come in soon.

For those that use fleece liners about how big are they?  I have a ton of fleece in my sewing stuff, so I can cut a few liners.  I assume I should just cut a strip.

aavt, the reason my "other brand of diapers" stink is because they have a microfiber liner.  From googling this seems to be a very very common complaint with "this other brand".  I have found a few things I'm going to try with "these other inserts".  But we use ME during the day so why not at night too?  My DS is exclusively breastfed.  We will start solids in March.

Thanks again.  You all are the best.

I cut my fleece liners the same size as the snap in liner.  That way it covers just about everything.  Fleece is great because it doesn't fray or require hemming.

I have also read about people having trouble with microfiber and all the many things that they have to do to get the stink out.  It seems like a lot of work.

Good luck.  Teething is hard on mom and baby and I hope you get some sleep soon!

I cut my fleece liners 1" bigger all the way around than my liners. But I use toddle-ease for nights, so there is extra room to do this as the Sandy's liners are smaller than the toddle-ease diapers. We use the bigger diapers because my son is a super-pee-er and needs 3 liners for absorbency. But he sleeps for 12 hours straight also, so that's lots of time to fill it also.
Just do what works for you. There is no "wrong way". Maybe cut 1 fleece insert to start and see if you like the size of it. Then cut more to your liking.
Teething is a bummer! I feel for ya mama!

Thought I would update and say thanks again.  2 nights of ME, 1 liner and some fleece have been great.  The diapers are soaked, but no leaks or odors (like with the "other brand").  We will continue with the ME.
