Okay mamas. Let's help ME figure this thing out. Something is happening and I agree that it's gotta be chemical related. If it was wear, it's be gradual & not sudden. And it's be in "wear" areas. So ladies, please tell me as much info as possible. What kind of dipe? How long have you had it? Your stash #s? Frequency of wash? Setting on washer you use, water temp & level? Do you hang or machine dry? Setting on dryer if so? Boy or girl(I'm just reaching....)? Where you live(for hard or soft water, or additives to tap water)? Wash routine, soaps, cleaners, rinses, stain treatments? What kind of pail do you use? Dry or wet? Where do you keep the dipes? ANYTHING else I've forgotten that could help. I don't want to see anymore bald spots on my dipes or anybody else's. We have got to help figure this thing out. Something is causing |

I'll start: Large Sandy's bamboo. Bought new in June 2008. Stash of 26. 15 bamboo liners. Wash every 3 days. Heavy Duty setting on washer, hot wash(120 degrees) cold rinse. Full tub. Takes about 35 minutes total. For stains, I only soak in tap water. Nothing added. Soak until stains are light, usually less than 5 hours. Drying: hang on line in summer. Dry on low heat in dryer in winter. Takes about 2 hours total. Diaper sprayer for BM. Toss in pail for wets. No one has ever washed my diapers except for me. Boy. Nebraska. City tap water. It is hard. I use 2 soapnuts with a drop or two of baby powder scented oil. 2 tablespoons washing soda(up until Nov 2008, then I switched to Borax since washing soda was not at the store I usually shop at), 1 cup vinegar in the rinse. Plastic pail, no liner. Dry pail. Nothing added into pail. Wipe out pail with only tap water, no cleanser. I keep my stash unfolded in a stack on an open shelf in my son's room. That is that. Nothing has changed since June except for the Borax since Nov. Sometimes I use Aquafor or Aveeno Baby ointment if he needs a rash creme. And I recently started using fleece liners in his bedtime dipes only. HTH. |

Bald spots
2 Organic Sandy (bought used), 5 Bamboo OS, 2 AIO, 8 Bamboo Sandies & 1 Unbleached cotton Sandy. All but Organic ones bought new in May 08. Every 2 days XL wash, Air & dryer Boy Hard city water Dunk, (no sprayer), dry pail, prerinse cold, wash hot, cold rinse & I did use Arm & hammer Sensitive but they said optical brightners bad on natural finers so I use my Ecos for now (all natural, no chemicals, brightners etc.) ocassionally vinegar if they get stinky. Dry pail (a trash can with lid Bathroom I rarely ever let any fecal matter sit on them. No one else has ever washed my dipes, no others houses, no hotels, laundry mat. No where but here. Only those 2 laundry soaps and allens naturally 1 time and he broke out with a bad rash. Method toilet bowl cleaner is all I use. I do not soak them in there either.
Good luck. I am so scared. |

OK, here it is: We have about 25 Large cotton Sandies on rotation Bought July 2008/September 2008 Wash every 2-3 days Cold rinse with nothing added Front loader, heavy wash on hot/cold - used to use washing soda or tide free and Calgon (told by ME it was okay to use...) but now we use only soapnuts liquid... Machine dry for a few minutes (medium heat) then hang to dry Boy Ontario, Canada (Hard water) no stain treatments whatsoever Dry pail, nothing in it rinse the pail with tap water only as we use a bummis wet bag Dipes are on a shelf in the bathroom
Hope that's it for the balding, 'cause I can't afford to lose anymore dipes!!

Ok here we go!
What kind of dipe? I have a large mix of regular cotton/organic cotton/bamboo Sandy's and One Size diapers. The thin areas are only appearing on the bamboo OS (on every one of the bamboo OS I have!)
How long have you had it? I have been using these diapers for about 8-9 months. I purchased them new.
Your stash #s? About 50 diapers total
Frequency of wash? Every other day
Setting on washer you use, water temp & level? My routine: I first run a cold rinse on the largest water level, in my extra large capacity washer. Then I run a hot wash (again on highest water level) on the Heavy setting, and cold rinse.
Do you hang or machine dry? Setting on dryer if so? Machine dry on low, takes about 2 hours
Boy or girl(I'm just reaching....)? Boy/girl twins
Where you live(for hard or soft water, or additives to tap water)? I live in a small town, public water. I don't think its either hard or overly soft.
Wash routine, soaps, cleaners, rinses, stain treatments? Wash routine answered above. I use Biokleen laundry powder during my hot wash, and spray poopy diapers with Bac-Out before they go into the pail.
What kind of pail do you use? Plastic pail with WAHMies wetbag
Dry or wet? Dry
Where do you keep the dipes? I keep the diapers folded in a three drawer organizer. -------- I had been using Biokleen detergent for about 5 months on my cotton ME diapers before I purchased my Bamboo. Since it worked so well with my cotton, I continued to use it when I added the Bamboo diapers to my stash. And if I am not mistaken, at one time ME actually made a mention to Biokleen detergent on this website, in the washing information area. They said something like "Many of our customers have reported success with Biokleen detergent." Biokleen does have oxygen bleach in the detergent. The mention of Biokleen is no longer in the washing instructions.............
**I am having NO problems with my Bamboo Sandy's or Bamboo liners. ONLY the Bamboo OS diapers. Everything is washed together, so I don't know what would cause ONLY the Bamboo OS to have the issues...

Wow mamas! The response has been more than I expected! When I talk to Erika on Tuesday, I will direct her to this thread. Having all this in one spot has got to be helpful. I hope they can tell us what it is that is causing these bald/worn spots on our dipes so the damage is able to stop here. The time you spent on detailing your washing routines will not be in vain, I will see to that personally. This stops with me. Right here. Right now. No more spots. |

Okay, this is what I have so far: We all have our dipes in the dryer for at least a little bit. We all dry pail. All of us wash on hot/rinse on cold. All but 1 of us has boys(odd, but entertaining!) All but 2 of us use either washing soda/baking soda(unless A&H sensitive contains soda, then it's all of us but 1). All but 1 of us have had our dipes LESS than 1 year, most of us less than 9 months. I made a bar graph out of all your info and this is what I've found. If you need to add or change any info, let me know so I can reflect it in my chart. Also, what diaper rash cremes do you all use? It is a chemical, I should reflect that in my charting as well. My only other question is if any of you have had to strip your dipes over their lifespan? So if there's a Calgon or Dawn or Vingar that isn't listed that should be. Again, please let me know if there are any changes you need to make. Thanks mamas! |

Something that I forgot to say. I use liners in each and every diaper. They are not disposable and are washed with the CDs. Just for ease of clean up when he poops and i never know when that will be! Oh, the fun.....
I need to also add that I didn't have a dryer until August this year. So my Sandys were never in the dryer until then, which is after I noticed the bald spots.
Thanks so much for doing this!!

| Just wanted to add that we don't use any diaper rash creams! Thanks Nakedbabytoes for doing all this!! |

|
| i have used California Baby Diaper Rash Cream for a bit, California Baby daily lotion for a while, I now use Aquaphor with every diaper change and have also used some Rx eczema creams ... we battled eczema in the diaper area for months! thanks for the reminder to post this info. also I use a snap in liner with every diaper. |

i use pinxalve, but i never use it in my cloth. I use sposies when i have to use it. I also use a liner everytime and also use a fleece liner as well. I only wash with my cloth wipes. I rarely use vinegar unless hubby says washer smells like a fishing pond. I too lined dried until maybe a month ago. It seemed strange that there was so much lint and I kept asking on posts if this was normal. I only own ME. My OS have some questionable spots on them.
The Arm & hammer ingredients are : biodegradeable surfactants (anionic and nonionic), Arm & Hammer Baking Soda, water softner, soil anti-deposition agent and optical brightner.
It was not until recent they told me optical brightner is hard on natural fibers, but they have not yet listed this on their site. ( I am begging for this because I love my bamboo and want to refer so many people to them). |

I use Weleda diaper rash cream....it`s a natural one, but there is zinc in it...sometimes I use Ihle`s paste, but every time I use a cream, I cover the area with a facecloth before putting the the dipe on....I do this all of the time, and for really bad rashes, when I have to add globs of cream, I use disposables. Stash: 24 Cotton one size - almost all bought used but none have had more than 11 months actual usage time(total for previous user and me combined).
15 Bamboo one size - almost all bought used also no more than 11 months actual usage time.
12 bamboo large sandys - 6 bought new last month and 6 bought used - under 8 months actual usage time.
I wash about every two days.
I do a prewash in cold water at the highest water level setting and then a hot wash on highest water level and heavy duty cycle and cold rinse.
I dry in the dryer on no or very low heat setting.
I use soapnut liquid and up until a few weeks ago was using borax. I have now switched to using soapnut liquid and calgon water softener. I have occasionally used vinegar in the rinse. I have never used anything else on them.
I use a dry pail lined with a swaddlebees pul liner. No additives. I just rinse out my pail with hot water.
I live in the country in Ohio. We have hard well water.
I have a boy.
I store the diapers in the shelf/drawer of my two changing tables. And of course a few in my diaper bag.
I occasionally use Northern Essence diaper creams. These are rated as being safe for usage with cloth diapers.
I use fleece liners.
I have 4 bamboo Sandy's that are showing small bald spots. They are located on the front near the soaker seam and the sandys whale logo. I also have balding near the snaps on the same corner of the diapers. I have 5 bamboo one size that are balding. These are all balding on the inside front of the diaper where the diaper and binding meet.
Although most of my diapers have been bought used, I was very picky about what I bought and who I bought from. Most everything has been purchased from well known posters on the boards so while I cannot be certain, I feel fairly safe in saying that they were not abused prior to my getting them. All of my used diapers had been used 6 months or less by the previous owner and by me for 5 months now.
Possibly this is just a coincidence, but I noticed that most of my diapers that are balding have noticeably larger amounts of trapped lint at the balding sites than my other diapers do. Also, some of my diapers that are not balding but have larger amounts of trapped lint look like they may start balding soon? |
|

|
Sorry I made a mistake in my last post and it won't let me modify it ?
My one size that are balding I have spot in the inside in the front and back of the diapers. In the front it is wear the diaper and binding meet. At the back it is by the snaps and near where the diaper meets the binding. |
|
|
|
I noticed the lint thing too. I know that the lint gets caught inside because it has nowhere to go due to being sewn shut BUT what I mean is that my "bald" spot diaper and my "wearing thin" spotted diapers have more lint trapped in the corners than my non-wearing thin/balding ones. Odd, but worth mentioning(okay, second-ing). Thanks Hailey! |
|

|
I too have a ton of lint in the corners. They told me this was normal. I mean some are chunks feeling. Even on my liners. My UB sandy does not have this. It is only tiny peices.
As far as pics, you can not see mine on the bamboo in pics, only when you hold it up to the light, but I know if I put them in the dryer, I am doomed. I did email pics of my organic cotton ones to ME (they have holes). |
