|Newborns almost never need any kind of insert/booster. The snap-in that works with the OS won't snap-in when the diaper is folded over in the newborn setting. You could just lay it in, or use a smaller one, but most people find that it is only later, around a year as you say, that you might need something. The exception might be once baby starts sleeping through the night or if you skip changing the diaper at night in hopes of minimizing disruptions with a feed. My DS#1 needed extra absorbancy with every diaper from around six months or so, until maybe 1 1/2, while DS#2 has never needed anything extra except for night, so it really depends on your babe.
