  Washing of Bamboo's (mommyinstincts)

I am planning on getting some MEOS Bamboos and have been going over the washing procedures for them.  I read over what is recommended, but was wondering about this...

is it best to rinse poppy diapers ASAP after changing the diaper?  OR can the rinsing wait until right before washing?  Also, instead of doing the cold water rinse prior to the regular hot water wash cycle, can i just rinse the diapers in cold in my utility sink directly before washing in the hot cycle?  to save time?  or would i be risking stains and such?

I really need it to be as simple as possible, but i also don't want to damage or mess up the diapers either.  Thanks for your help.

Jen

I would say that for a BF newborn you could wait to rinse right before washing; I actually just threw them in for a cold rinse cycle before washing on hot and because BF poo is water-soluble it was fine.  But if you're going to hand rinse them anyway, you could do it asap after a poop or wait until before washing.  If you care about stains probably asap after the poo, but I don't really know because I don't care about stains; I figure it's a garment which is made to be pooped on so some staining is OK.  And with a newborn eating and pooping every 2 hours it was much easier to throw them in for a cold rinse then do a hot wash.  When you start your baby on solids, you should rinse asap after a poop to make sure no smell lingers, and baby will be pooping less frequently then anyway so it won't be as hard.  And they'll probably get rinsed better with the utility sink than the washer as long as you're rinsing under running water, not just soaking.  I even have to rinse my son's wet diapers every day now because he doesn't nurse a lot and his pee is really strong.  He's 8 months old.

Make it as simple as possible.
We got a diaper sprayer from day 1. We have always sprayed off the poo dipes and then threw them in the pail. No pre-treating or remembering to shake stuff off or pre-rinse.
When I wash, it's as simple as a regular load of laundry.
Dump in the dipes. Put in detergent. Run Heavy duty wash, hot water,  high tub.
That's that.
Dry as you'd like.
9 months with bamboo and no stinkies.
Very few stains.
It's just like an extra load of towels.
It's so easy that I wish I'd done it 8 years ago with my first son.

i apologize for asking my own question here but, nakedbabytoes ... do you rinse your pee diapers too or just poo? i am just curious because you said you don't run a pre-rinse cycle on your washer. how well do you rinse the poo diapers? i am always looking for ways to simplify.

I dunk.
I dry pail
I prerinse in the washer (probably less water used here, but I am guessing), then wash in the washer with 1/4 detergent
I line/dryer dry.
some stains, but they are dipes.  They eventually fade.

I just diaper spray the poo ones. We have a diaper sprayer that'd knock the paint off your house! So basically the poo dipes are cleaner than the pee dipes going into the washer. I haven't had any stink issues with not pre-rinsing the dipes or spraying off the pee ones.
Ain't broke, why fix it?
I wash every third day with no issues. Super easy wash routine that works for us.

nakedbabytoes:  What kind/brand of sprayer do you have??

Made by the folks at PottyPail.com
I love it, adjustable flow and we have a "rare" kind of toilet(lucky us!), so he custom made the fittings for us. We are in the process of buying our first house, so we will need to contact him again soon once we can measure our new toilet. I'd hate to go long without my sprayer.
I've also heard of people using those shower head sprayers that you can take off the wall(like a hendheld shower thing) and we used something like that when we were on vacation to my hubby's parent's house in Wyoming, but that sandblasted power wash I was used to wasn't there.
So it was nice to get back home!

What kind of diaper pail do you use?  Is it one that seals in the smell (like diaper champ), or loose life, no lid?

One pail is a vented top safety first step lever opening diaper pail. You are supposed to use garbage bags with it if you use posies. I just use nothing in it, no liner. So there is air flow in that one. The plastic screw on lid pail is from my hubby's apartment complex's swimming pool. I guess their charcoal for the filters came in it. So that one has no air flow since the lid screws on. We also don't line that one either.
The screw on pail is in baby's room for convience & safety(he can't go yummy potty diaper diving!) and the vented one is upstairs in our bathroom closet where we powerwash the poo dipes.
So essentially, we have both a non-air flow and an air-flow. I don't notice any issues where one is better or worse than the other. My dipes all smell clean & fresh.
We dry pail both.
