I know I've seen this posted several times before, but thought I'd post with my particulars to get the best advice...
We have been using bamboo Sandies for 5 months and now have the stinkies. The dipes are fine when dry or freshly washed but still wet, but as soon as they are peed on they smell very strongly of urine. Our washing routine is: Hot wash followed by 2 cold rinses in front loading washer with 1/2 tablespoon of Nellies and recently a 1/4 cup vinegar to try and combat the smell (not really working). I am assuming I need to strip them? What is the best method? If need be, I can take them to my Mom's house as she still has a top loading machine if that would be more effective.
Thanks! |

I would think that if they only smell when peed in that there could be one of two causes. The first would be buildup of detergent and to strip diapers you would just run them through some extra hot cycles without any detergent or other additives until you don't see any more bubbles in the rinse water. If you can figure out how to stop your machine after the hot cycle is done then you can restart ... the cold cycle won't do much for removing the detergent. It does not sound like you have too much buildup so you should be fine doing this in your front loader ... if it has a high water setting you could use that along with the hot.
Another issue to consider might be the pee itself. You don't say how old your child is but toddler pee is considerably stronger smelling than baby pee. Also with toddler pee it can be more concentrated if they are busy running wild and not drinking as much liquid ... or if they are eating something new.
I hope this helps and that I am not just repeating information that you already know. |

Can I add that Toddlers don't pee as often as babies either. They are learning control, so for us it seems he empties it all at one time and then goes an hour with nothing. Sometime 2-3 depending on how much he drinks (like the PP said).

Thanks for the replies. DS is only 9 1/2 months, so I'm not sure if he would be having more concentrated urine yet. I do think it's the diapers; it's such a strong odor, and almost stinky like a dirty diper.
I tried doing a cycle of pre-wash (hot), hot wash, and 2 cold rinses, no detergent last night and it did not make a difference. I am just running them through again with a hot heavy duty wash and 1/4 TBS of Nellies. Sigh, it's so frustrating! I love CD ing but I hate how these diapers smell now.
Has anyone ever gotten information directly from ME how to solve this problem? |

Maybe you're not using enough soap if they smell dirty still. I know, it's like the opposite of stripping, isn't it. Sorry, that's all I got! |

| my sister had some very stinky problems we didn't know if it was bacterial or protiens that have a chemical reaction to the pee, what we think is that since she was washing diapers every other day and a large diaper load at once her rinse water was too concentrated with urine from the diapers, I didn't have smelly problem but I didn't separate my laundry out I just treated a wet diaper as any clothing and so I washed diapers with clothes, I know some moms have prolific poopers but truly we only had a couple of easily managed poops a day. anyway, we also thought perhaps to much detergent, holding the protien to the diaper even though invisible, we found the quickest way was to put diapers in bath tub with lots of baking soda rubbed into each diaper and lots of baking soda in the water, leave it over night or do it a couple of times (I did it a couple of times and this totally got the smell out) before that I tried bleach and the sunshine (if it removes poop stains then it may remove urine stuff) these things may have helped but overall, for us, the best prevention was washing no more than 10 diapers at a time, and using very little detergent only a tablespoon to be honest. wash a load every day, dont use a pail, use the clothes hamper, but I understand other use more traditional methods, pails and diaper only loads and do okay. So it may not be necessary what we do for prevention but it really works for us, plus that means no diaper has to wait more than a day to get washed, and it is in breathable conditions so if there is bacteria it doesn't have time to over reproduce. If it is bacterial or chemical, it seems a baking soda soak in the tube is a good fix. |

Thanks for the suggestions!
I just wanted leave an update - I seemed to have gotten rid of the stinkies with the following wash routine: pre-wash heavy duty cycle extra rinse all done on hot, with 1/2 scoop Nellies and 1/4 cup of vinegar Yay! I am so happy to have nice smelling diapers again! |
