Apple cider vinegar in the final rinse? (jayne)
Posted: 12:47:35 pm on 2/16/2009 Modified: Never

From time to time I use a little white vinegar in my final rinse just to help get all detergent out and keep them a little softer since I line dry (per reading this advice on this forum).  Well.... I made a bunch of homeade apple cider this fall, and decided to try my hand at making hard cider.  It turns out I am not very good at making hard cider and it turned into apple cider vinegar, which I plan to use for cooking, cleaning, etc.  My question is, can I use this in my final rinse in place of white vinegar?   Will it leave a smell or do anything bad to the diapers?  Just wondering if anyone has heard of this before.  I have like over 10 gallons on hand... I thought I might as well use it for this purpose if it won't hurt the diapers.
Thanks.

Other than the fact that it's got a color to it vs white vinegar, you should be fine.
Using vinegar in the final rinse usually doesn't leave much of a smell at all on the dipes. And color wise, I'd think it'd be diluted enough not to matter.
Are you a member of a more frequently traveled forum?
Like maybe Diaperswappers?
I'm sure if you ask your question on the Diaper Chatter forum, some other mama is bound to have tried it before & knows for sure if it's okay.
I've never used colored cider vinegar, so I'm just guessing really.
Hate to see a question go unanswered!

I would think it would be fine.  I used malt vinegar (the nasty brown stuff) several times without any issues, and distilled malt vinegar (clear, nearly the same ughish smell as brown) fairly regularly when living in the UK.  There was maybe a very faint smell when out of the washer, but no color issues, and no smell when dry (or subsequently peed on).  If you find it too smelly, you could try adding it earlier in the cycle and see if you like the results any better.  But unless it's waaaaay more acidic than white vinegar (usually about 5%, same as my bottle of apple cider vinegar) you should be fine.
