I had been reading about making homemade wipes, but never got around to it with my first child because I just didn't have the ingredients for all the recipes for homemade wipes, and it just seemed too much bother (lazy, I know)
For my second child (now 6 months old), I just decided to use a set of coloured baby washcloths, wet a few of them with just plain water from the tap every morning. I leave them in a tupperware container during the day and throw them in the diaper pail with the diapers when I use them. I wash them along with the diapers. It's actually easier than using the storebought wipes, and I like them better as well (fewer chemicals)
I know that the recipes with detergent, tea tree oil etc. likely smell nice and may clean a bit better, but for anyone looking for the easiest solution- try using just washcloths and water!

I second the simplicity of water and a wash cloth. I have been doing this for over 4 years. I just wet a cloth as needed as I go by the bathroom.

I just switched to cloth a few months ago and i do the same thing. I wasn't planning on switching to cloth wipes but after a few poopy cloth diapers i quickly realized that it would be easier!! I no longer had somewhere to put the soiled wipes. It's easier to just put a soiled cloth wipe in the bucket with the diapers!! I have the changing pad in my bathroom since i have a big cupboard next to the sink. I just run the water until it's warm and get it wet. I had thought about all those recipes but i think i have an allergy to tee tree oil so i've been hesitant to try it and i just plain forget to look for the recipes and ingredients when i go out. The water seems to work just fine for me. I don't think the other is really necessary..like you said, probably smells nice but water seems fine. Maybe with newborn poo it wouldn't work as well since that stains like crazy!! Hmm thinking back i actually had to use cloth wipes with my first for the first month due to a horrible rash(i just used water because i had never heard of homemade solutions) and i remember when i switched back to store bought it really did clean better..so maybe that's the difference. With newborns maybe the solution is best but for older babies just water works fine!

I actually never used anything but cloth wipes and water and I didn't find it hard with newborn poop. And actually, when I used disposables on a trip, I found it horrible because the disposable wipes are so thin compared to good old washcloth, it felt like I was wiping his bum with my hands. It seemed to take a lot more disposable wipes than cloth ones to get rid of the same mess... So I think a lot of it has to do with what you're used to.

Yeah, some disposable wipes are better than others, but still, I find that I have to use a ton and they are so thin! Some awful poops takes piles and piles, and I think, man I could do this with two washcloths . . . I've always just used plain, room-temperature water. Some mornings that's got to be pretty cold, but hey, my DS only seems to have started minding recently, and at this point I hope it will inspire him toward PTing! :-)

I use an old squeeze bottle filled with water and just squirt it on the dipers. It's room temp. and saves me the trip to the bathroom each time, except when I need to fill it.

I do the same! I still like the smell of the store bought wipes, but hate the cost. Plus, it's an extra stop at the trash can.
All I do is as I need the cloth, I warm it up, use it and put it right with the diaper. I figure, you are already doing laundry! I even have rags that a family member had cut up for me to use as wipes, and I don't use them. The idea was to throw them away just like a disposable wipe...but like I said, that is still an extra stop at the trash. Instead, I use those rags around the house |

I also use cloth wipes and after much juggling with the easiest method have found that taking a handful (maybe 8-10) and putting a bit of body wash in a wipes warmer with some warm water and then putting the cloth wipes in the warmer. i plug it in right by my change table and viola, wonderful smelling, great cleaning, AND NICE AND WARM cloth wipes. Then I simply add more if I run out (there's usually water left over when I ring the wipe to use at a bum change) and I find after 2 days I fully change the water and soap (I simply add more until then if needed until then) and add any unused wipes into the diaper pale...they can get musty if left for two long. Hope this helps someone!
