  Prewashing new ME Diapers (mommyinstincts)

I know I am supposed to pre-wash the new diapers I just got, but I have heard some people say that they should be washed more than once.  Can someone give me some insight on this?  What's the process?  Do I need to dry between each time they are pre-washed?

Thanks!

Jen

I am sure you will get varied responses but I believe the instructions say prewash and dry three times. I know some people say that they prewashed and dried once and then they just became more absorbent as they were used ... this would probably work fine for a newborn as they get changed so often but not so well with an older child. Also, this would depend on the type of diaper ... the unbleached and organics definitely have more oils left in the fabric due to less processing ... the bleached would have less oils so would need fewer washing to reach maximum absorbency. Anyway, I think it is all in what you are comfortable with. Oh, and as a side note, when I prewashed (and I did do the full three washes but did not dry in between) I used very little detergent. HTH and that I did not ramble on too much

I had read other moms on the forum mentioning that you didn't need to dry in between washes, so I did the three washes in a row. I used detergent in the first two washes and nothing in the third to make sure diapers were rinsed properly (as I didn't do an extra rinse). It worked fine for me, although I had a newborn so as PP said, you don't need much absorbency at that stage. When I received new diapers later on, I pre-washed the same way, but the first few times they were used we did notice they were a bit less absorbent than our old ones. They still worked fine, though.

A side note about lint: ME mentions not to wash more than a certain number of diapers at a time for fear of lint accumulations. I found that it depends a lot on the fabric. People have mentioned lots of lint with the cotton diapers, but when I pre-washed my bamboo diapers there was barely any lint on any of those three washes, so I could have washed more than the amount mentioned.

Good luck!

No need to dry between washes, as the point is to get rid of the oils.  Drying doesn't do anything for this, so no need at all.
