XS Sandy's vs. MEOS for a newborn (stephanieca)
Posted: 6:50:03 pm on 2/24/2009 Modified: Never

I am expecting my first child in a month and am trying to decide if it is worth it to get XS Sandys if I'm planning to use MEOS (spec. bamboo) afterwards. I've looked up the weight recommendations, which put the OS as good for 8 lbs. up to 35. I have no idea what my baby is expected to weigh, but figure s/he'll be on the small-ish side as my sister and I were both small (5lbs. 9oz.--but 3 weeks early)--but what do I know. So, if baby is smaller than 8lbs. will the OS work? maybe with a liner just to take up space? It'll probably be only for a month or two, right?

Comments? Words of wisdom? Any will be happily accepted.

Thanks!

I used the OS from 6.5 lbs on DS#2 without any leaking problems.  I obviously can't promise that would work for everyone, but I think that if you don't mind the bulk, the OS will likely work from even lower weights than 8 lbs.

If you think your baby will be smallish I would definitely recommend the xs Sandy's.  They fit so nicely and it gives you one less concern when dealing with a newborn.  We put them on our DS as soon as we got home from the hospital.  He didn't wear them for long because he was a big baby but we really liked the fit.  I would especially recommend them if you're planning on having another baby and then could sell them after that.

I used both XS and OS on my 7 pound newborn from day 1. For the first, maybe, week or two, because I wasn't used to cloth diapers, I thought the OS was way too big (although it worked perfectly well), but after a few weeks we almost stopped using the XS. It was mostly personal preference - they both worked fine until DS was about 2 months - but the OS seemed easier to deal with.

When I had to stop using the XS after 2 months, I thought I should have saved money and skipped it since I had to buy more OS (the rest of my stash was not enough since at that point we still went through a lot of diapers every day). It was nice, though, to use under smaller outfits. So to answer your question the OS can very well fit lower weights than 8 pounds, but if you plan on using cloth right away the XS may be nice to have depending on your level of comfort with bulk and your propensity to put your baby in cute outfits :-)

Thanks for all the advice. I think I am going to go with the XS Sandy's. They're just SO much smaller than the OS--and I like cute baby outfits.

I have a newborn and the MEOS doesn't fit right on him at all.  In fact, it didn't fit very well on my other son so its been sitting around without use for awhile.

The sandies are great.  My baby fits well in the sm. sandies @ nearly 11lbs.

I wanted my newborn to look like a newborn and fit in the newborn outfits aswell, so I did XS till 2 months and than Smalls till they no longer fit. I used OS after that. Each to their own, but that's how I felt.

Congratulations too!!!

I am using prefolds, a snappi, and AF covers on my newborn until she grows into the MEOS, and I love them.  They aren't too bulky and were only about $2 each.  With the AF I have never had a leak or blowout.

My cding friend that got me hooked on meos, used pfs and snappis and me covers till her twins, then later dd reached 8 lbs.
I only recently started using the meos with some regularity (dd is 4.5 months now). I started with infant pfs..
Have read that ppl use the meos on their nb's even though under 8 lbs. Mine gaped at the legholes as dd was a skinny minny and had little chicken legs. (Shes made up for it now and is F.A.T. so meos work well around her legs yet dont leave red marks).
