Hi, everyone. I'm expecting our third child in August. It will be our first time using cloth diapers. Today I just today a starter kit of one-size Mothereases at a consignment sale and they were brand new. Do people use liners (biodegradable or cloth) with a newborn? Are the newborn BM stains hard to get out?
Thanks |

| I never use liners with a newborn, and bm stains (of breastfed babies is what I know about ) is very easy to remove. there usually isn't enough poop to even have to rinse out, so usually just treat poop like you would urine when you throw it in the wash. If the stain did not come out of the washing, dont worry even if you already dried it or washed and dried many times, the stain will come out very easy with the sun. All you do is take a clean stained diaper and wet it with cold water over the stain, then put the diaper in a sunny location, and the stain will be gone even before the diaper is dry! |

First, congratulations, and welcome to cloth! Liner use is really a matter of personal preference. I found that the flushable/disposable liner weren't much good for BF poop, since it's so liquid. I did start using fleece liners at about 3 months, and just stuck with those. They keep baby feeling a bit dryer (not that baby seems to care), help with staining, and make poop cleanup a little easier when not dealing with BF poop. My experience with newborn poop is a bit different than the PP's. DS#1 went every feed, amazing quantities. I was so very, very grateful for Motherease diapers because with rare exception they kept all of it contained (while it was all over him and me with disposables). I did rinse off my diapers before putting them in the pail, but as PP said, many people just put them straight into the pail. BF poop is so water-soluable that it usually just rinses out (most people who do this will do a pre-wash). Formula poop should be mostly gotten off the diapers beforehand, though. My diapers were this really amazing shade of orange inside for several months. I wasn't bothered by it, but once the weather was nice for hanging my diapers outside, I did. That was really just for drying, but the results were absolutely amazing. My MIL asked if I'd gotten new diapers, because they were all suddenly pristine again. The sun is great for older-kid poop stains, too, though those can be a bit more stubborn. For BF poop, the sun really is like magic--hard to believe until you've seen it! |

Congratulations! And how exciting you found new ME at a consignent sale- what a nice suprise! I second the fleece liners! My son is 6 weeks tomorrow, and I dont have a problem with stains. I've never really worried about it, and since they are unbleached cotton, they are even harder to detect. I have put my white prefolds in the sun before, but they are bright white to start with.
I put all my diapers in a pail, and wash every other day. I do a cold rinse, hot wash, then extra cold rinse. I so far dont have problems with stink or stains... though they come out a little rough even when I dry them for 20 minutes, then finish drying on a rack.
Good luck, and trust me, stains wont bother you as much as you think! You know they are clean no matter what!
