question Help! My brand new diapers don't absorb liquid. (mommyjoy3)

My baby is almost two weeks old and I am ready to start using cloth. I have OS diapers and some prefolds. The PF came with instructions on prepping them, washing several times in hot water. When I poured water on the new OS diapers and liners water puddles on the top of the diaper. I have washed them 6 times in hot water now and they don't seem to absorb any better. What do I do??

Thanks, MommyJoy3

Did you wash them with detergent or just plain water??  you might need to use detergent for the first few washes as you need to get rid of the natural oils on the fibers...  Also, if you have the unbleached OS, you need more washes than with the bleached ones.  Hope that helps!

Even like that, they may work fine since you 2-week-old won't need much absorbency and his weight in the diaper may help it absorb. But it does sound abnormal! Do you use fabric softener? It can cause repelling issues...

You could boil the prefolds if you are finding they are not absorbent enough yet.  I was in the same situation years ago and boiling really took the oils out fast.

You could just use your OS and prefolds as is as well and the more you wash them the more absorbent they will become.  A brand new little one like yours will have her diaper changed so frequently that absorbency is not so much of an issue right now.
