  New to CD--necessities?? (stephanieca)

Hello! So, I am new to cloth diapering and due in 2.5 weeks. I'm just trying to make sure I have everything I need. I have diapers and covers, flushable liners, washcloths to use as wipes, changing pad, a wet bag for the diaper bag, a diaper pail...What else do I need?

How do you wet your "wipes" when not in the bathroom?

Does anyone have a recommended diaper rash cream that's ok for CDs?

Thanks!!

I think all you really need now is the baby!

I like fleece liners, too, but they aren't necessary.

I keep a plastic tub on the shelf over the changing table.  I keep some wipes in it, with a little bit of water.  Many people keep a squirt bottle, thermos, etc. on the changing table.

I hope you'll have the experience that most of us do--that you won't need to use diaper cream much at all.  For when you do need it, I think the most important thing is to avoid things (like traditional Desitin) with fish oil in them.  I usually use (but infrequently) a zinc and castor oil cream.  I have also used Boudreaux's Butt Paste and haven't noticed any problems.

I started out with a dozen diapers, 4 covers, and plastic grocery sacks instead of a wet bag (we did a load every night). I think you'll be fine with what you've got, and you can add on as needed.

As for diaper cream, I use eucerin lotion or a thin layer of vaseline when my DD's skin gets pink. I've found it is less likely to be a "rash" and more likely to be irritation from wetness and friction with the diaper. The lotion provides just enough protection to keep the skin happy, and I haven't noticed any problems with the diaps.

By the way, if you plan to breastfeed I would not recommend using the flushable wipes. BF poop is water soluble, so you can wash the dirty diaps as is--no rinsing or liners needed. Save your liners for when you transition to solids (that's when the poop is worst in the diaper).

oh, I use Desitin!  (only when needed)  Why should it be avoided?  What about Sudocreme or Penaten, which I also sometimes use?

Traditional Desitin has fish oil in it (creamy does not), and apparently it can build up and cause both repellancy and stink.  If you're using it only occasionally, maybe it's too big a deal.  Also, if you're using something like a fleece liner, that should keep most of the goop off the diaper itself.
I've used Sudocrem myself (again, only quite occasionally) and haven't had any problems.  It's fairly thick, but it doesn't have the fish oil in it.
I don't know much about Penaten, but if you have a tube you can check the ingredients for fish oil.

I'm a mom of 3 but this is the first child I've CD (fear of the unknown with the first two) but I've found that I've needed very little rash cream. The best thing is air drying. I've also been told that if your Breast feeding that the milk on the rash helps a lot in healing too
