question do you leave doublers snapped thru wash? (retromamma)

For you mamas with older babies using the snap-in doubler and the One Size...

We just started using the doublers snapped in over night.  Do you leave them snapped in through the wash or do you unsnap after changing the soiled ones?

Husband and I are debating whether there's more risk breaking a snap by attaching and detaching or risking ripping a snapped one out during the wash. After the wash, I snap back together when folding the laundry anyway. I think he's concerned with saving time, but I'm more concerned with longevity.

He thinks the wet fabric after a pee is too fragile to handle unsnapping, but I think in the washing machine [where the dipes will be wet anyway] there are more uncontrolled forces yanking at the two parts.  Atleast if it's done by hand, pressure can be applied close to the snap to pry apart.

Just wondering what you do!

I have always unsnapped, and never really thought about until someone posted a similar question (probably several years ago by now!).  But then I thought about it and kept unsnapping.  My rationale is that getting tossed around in the wash attached can't be good for the snaps on either the diaper or liner.  Now, I believe that many people do leave theirs snapped and have never heard anything to indicate that this can damage the snaps, so although I think the theory is there, esp. if you have a top-loader (those agitators are mean things), in reality it's probably not an issue.  I agree with you that the washer would put more stress on the snaps than a careful unsnapping by hand.
A more real issue for me is that I line-dry, so want the parts to be separate for quicker drying.  If you are only tumble-drying, then this probably isn't an issue, as the liner would likely flap free enough for the diaper and liner to both dry okay.

When I used the One-Size I also used a liner in every diaper and would always leave them snapped. Granted I only used the diapers for about 6 months (switched back to Sandy's) but they were almost always still snapped when coming out of the washer so I can't imagine there was that much stress on them.

I think the kind of washer you have is a factor to consider. Front loaders are gentlest on clothes no doubt about it. But most 'modern' top loaders (say anything in the last maybe 5 years or so) aren't like the old ones. They don't shake from direction to another in an almost violent manner like they used to. Nowadays the agitator just shakes relatively gently and always in one direction. It just gets clothes moving in a kind of circle from the top of the washer to the bottom and back up again so it's much gentler than it used to be.

Anyway, all that to say that although theoretically it's probably safest to unsnap first, I really don't think it's necessary. I've always been big on my diapers longevity as well but personally I think the yickiness of unsnaping a wet and/or soiled liner from the diaper just isn't worth it.

My 2 cents,
Karen.

I always left mine snapped through my old TL washer and in the dryer.  Or when  I did occasionally hang them on the line I left them snapped as well.  In my experience the cotton fibers and the elastic wore out while the snaps were still going strong.  ME snaps are unbelievably high quality.  The main benefit of leaving them snapped is I saved time putting them away because I didn't have to re-snap the clean ones.  These diapers last a very long time; I have just now replaced mine I bought new in 2004 and three babies have worn full-time.  They may have lasted longer had I been more careful with them.  Efficiency and convenience are really important to me; I was not very gentle with mine.  I used oxy-boost, which ME strongly discourages, and almost always dried in the dryer.

I could have postponed replacing them, but they have lost so much softness and absorbency, as compared to my brand new ones; I know the polyester is still there, but the cotton has been gradually washed away, so now perhaps they are about 60% cotton, 40% poly.  But the fact is they still worked (with a newer organic cotton liner inside to boost absorbency) and replacing them at this point was optional.

As time went on the snaps did grow slightly weaker, so that after washing and dryer drying some of them had come unsnapped.  They never came unsnapped while my baby was wearing them.  Eventually I decided that, to be most efficient, I would not even bother snapping the liner in at all.  I was happy with this; the liner stays in place perfectly without being snapped in.  It is handy to keep them from getting separated in the diaper bag, but beyond that snapping the liner is IMO optional.

One last point is you are of course unsnapping the diaper to take it off the baby.  So why would you find it necessary to treat the liner snaps any differently?  Don't worry; they'll last!

I also stopped snapping my liners in. They stayed in place great and no worries about laundering.

If they have poo I unsnap em to clean em.  (I dunk, no fancy sprayer here )But if just pee, I leave it on.
