  Cotton vs. bamboo (toto)

Hi there,

I am new to ME diapers. I use only Indian prefolds. I am thinking of ordering Sandy's for night diapering. I would like to order bamboo because they are supposed to be super soft and also it is a more renewable resource. I was wondering how it compares to the cotton diapers with regards to absorbency. I have 4 month old twins and they sleep about 6 hrs at a stretch during the night.

Also they (the twins) are a little small - 11 pounds so wondering how the small size Sandy's diaper will fit them.

Oh, and I will be using Nikky's with the Sandy's diapers, any feedbacks on how well it will fit.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

thanks
deepa

Hello,

The only question I can help you with is that of bamboo vs cotton as I have not used the Sandy's (only OS). Bamboo, as a fabric, is more absorbent than cotton, but the diapers have the same absorbency; what Mother-Ease did is make the bamboo diaper thinner than the cotton one for the same absorbency. It is softer, but it takes more time to dry than cotton, if that is a problem for you.

In recent months, some people have started wondering if bamboo diapers would be as durable as the cotton ones have been (you will see plenty of discussion on that matter on the Forum). It is a new fabric choice, so it's hard to tell for sure until enough time has passed. But several people complained about premature wear on their relatively new diapers. I believe Mother-Ease was nice enough to offer to replace any diaper that was aging prematurely. The number of people complaining was small compared to the number of happy users, and it could be that they faced a combination of factors that would explain the premature wearing (hardness of water, detergent/additives used, batch of fabric, etc.). But to my knowledge, it has not been totally explained.

Some people have also expressed concerns about whether or not bamboo fabric is more sustainable than, say, organic cotton when you factor in the transportation from distant countries and the chemicals used to transform the fiber. I haven't done the research myself, but I don't think people came to a definite conclusion on which was best.

All that to say that cotton is a more proven fabric, but bamboo has its advantages and I personally don't regret purchasing bamboo. Hope that helps!

I think that the S Sandys would fit your twins beautifully.  I used them from 6.5lb to 22lbs on my always-small son.  If you are looking for a trimmer fit, the bamboo would be the way to go, but since it's for night, I'd guess that doesn't matter much.

The previous posters have covered your other questions just fine so I'll cover the one about the Nikkys. Personally I think it will be difficult to use the Nikkys with Sandy's. The Sandy's are fairly wide on the hips whereas the Nikkys are pretty narrow at that spot so you'll likely have some issues covering the diaper properly. Granted it's been a number of years since I've used Nikkys but all the designs they had at the time wouldn't have worked well. They're great to use with prefolds, flats and such but I found them very difficult to use with fitteds.

Karen.

I think they stink less.  I mean, my toddler pee is stinky and if I use the regular cotton at night, look out.  But that is me.  I have not heard of anyone else having this issue.

First I think the small Sandies will be perfect fit for your twins. They are at the right weight where you should still get lots of use out of them.

I have all three types of materials and honestly like them all for differing reasons.

I like the regular cotton because it honestly looks just like it did when I bought it 9 months ago. My only concern with them is that we have a Frontloader, and because they are a little thicker and have poly in them, I have to be really diligent to make sure all the detergent out or they do get a little odor.

The bamboo, is so trim and soft, and I absolutely love it in the MEOS, it just look so incredibly cute on him. I Can see already though, how some of the serging on the Sandies seems more deligate and the diaper just looks more used then the cotton. The bamboo Sandy seems to sag more than the regular cotton Sandy. My other complaint is that for some reason when DS pess in the bamboo, it automatically wicks the moisture all the way to the back of the diaper, so instead of just being wet in the front, he seems more wet everywhere. Not a huge deal for us during the day, as I change him frequently anyways.

The Organic Cotton is our nighttime diaper. It is just so absorbant and with a Stay Dry liner, DS is really quite comfortable all night. The urine does not immediately wick to the back, and most times he wakes up the back of the diaper is still totally dry after 10 or so hours in it, and nursing a few times as well. We mostly use a wool soaker at night, but occasionaly I use the MEAF cover, and we have never had a leak at night, and we co-sleep, so that's really important..lol. I can tell though that they  are waring a little bit faster and would not last through many children, but they are holding up OK for use with just him, and maybe I could use them for another child, I'll have to see. He's only 10 months right now.

Oh,btw, after trying tons of different diapers, motherease makes up 95% of our diapers. We only have a few other brand name AIO's for occasional use when I run low on diapers, or am going out and want something really trim. Kathy
