UPDATE: Well, you ladies were correct and this was in fact a yeast rash we were dealing with.

Now, the problem is...I can't get rid of it..

I've tried: Lotrimin for 1.5 weeks with no change, Vusion cream which made it worse, keeping her diaper free for most of the day, wipes with GSE and TTO..

Now, I'm trying Gentian Violet (this is day 2 of treatment)

The rash looks better, but is never really gone.  It's not in the folds of her thighs, but more on the "fat rolls" and on her pubic area still.  Looks like bumps.

I have her in disposables now because of the gentian violet.  When she was in cloth I was very careful with my wash routine so she would not cross contaminate herself..

Anyone have any ideas to what's going on? I will make another doctor's appointment (the third in a month!) for them to take a look at it again.

Thanks!

I've been using Motherease diapers for almost a year now.  On my first daughter I've had no problems AT ALL, I started using them when she was a toddler.  My second daughter is now 3 months old and initially we had no issues with rash, but in the last two weeks she has a red, bumpy raised rash over her thighs and top of her vagina (there is no rash on her buttocks or anus)

I wash with ECOS free and clear and use very little in our front loader.  The last two washes I changed to Soapnuts but so far it has not made a difference.

I used disposables today and the rash is still present but looks less red and bumpy.

My first daughter is still using the diapers with no problem at all.

I've been putting Aquaphor at night (with disposable diaper).  Zinc creams tend to make it dry and rough.

Could it be buildup?  I would be so surprised since I use very little detergent.

Sorry this is soooo long, I just need some help so I can get her back in her diapers!

Thanks

Red and bumpy sounds like a yeast rash--my DS had only one, but that's exactly what it was like.  There are at-home remedies, but if it's the first one, it's probably best to see the dr or nurse to confirm and get advice.  With my DS, there wasn't anything in particularly that I could figure out as the cause for his rash.  It was just there, I treated it, and it went away, never to reemerge.
It's possible that a baby could react to buildup more quickly than a toddler because of more sensitive skin, but a rash from build-up is more likely to be patchy and sometimes can look a little like a burn.  You'd also probably be noticing a strong ammonia (or sometimes just awfully stinky when wet) smell.  I'm not an expert, but everything I've read on this forum makes it sound like it's more likely that you're dealing with yeast rather than build-up.

I would try stripping them...even if you don't use much detergent, you'd be surprised by how much residue is left.  I find it easiset to strip them in a top-loader (my mom's!) b/c you can easily tell when no more bubbles are coming out, but a FL will work too.  Set the water level as high as you can (sometimes a button.  Search this forum for more info if needed.

PS It seems like a silly questions, but are her diapers too tight?

Nope, diapers not tight...I'm using the MEOS with medium airflow covers.

I've had her in disposables now and I put some hydrocortisone cream last night and the rash has almost completely disappeared. Can it still be yeast if it went away with hydrocortisone?

Can I boil the diapers to make sure the soap is out?  I'm not sure how hot my FL gets.  I put it on the "Whitest whites" setting which is a hot wash and cold rinse.

I tried using fleece liners that I cut myself.  But, when I put water on it, it looks as if the water doesn't go through, it looks like it's waterproofed.  I stopped using those.

Maybe I should buy the stay dry liners (not the snap in soaker ones). Do you think that will help?

I agree to have a dr/nurse check if this is the first incidence.

Perhaps try using some colloidal silver, either the gel or in a spray. I've had success with this for diaper rash/yeast. I'm curious if others have tried this?

Hi,

I agree with seeing a doctor on this one. You could always let it heal completly then put her back in cloth and see if it comes back if you'd like. The cortisone will help heal the skin more than traditional diaper rash creams so it could be just the 'kick' it needed. But if it comes back I'd definetly see a doc...

It is possible for it to be yeast (or something similar) even if it goes away in disposables. When my first dd was little she had this stubborn rash that just wouldn't permanently go away. I would treat the heck out of it with every home remedy under the sun (including disposables for long periods), it would go away completly or almost completly and then come back again (and always in the exact same spot). I finally got fed up and showed it to the doc. She gave me a prescription for an anti-fungal with a little cortisone. It healed up within days and never came back (after months of other 'treatments').

At the time I didn't know it but it's sometimes necessary to treat the diapers as well, just to prevent reinfection back/forth between skin and diapers. Of course, this is not always necessary (I never needed to do it) but I thought I'd mention it just in case. I don't have much time now but you can look up past threads on yeast for ideas on how to treat the diapers as well as the skin.

I would advise caution with boiling. It can damage snaps and perhaps elastic as well. If you'd like you can always up the temp on your hot water tank (temporarily). Sometimes front loaders even heat up the water further.

For the fleece that's pretty normal. There are some fleece types that are water/wind proofed but they're usually a specialty fleece that's not only more expensive but also usually more difficult to find. Even regular fleece is only semi-permeable though so it's normal if you just pour water on it that it will bead up. Pressure of any kind (like from baby's skin in the diaper) will make it go through. Usually you can even just put your finger on the water and you'll see it soak through. Unless you're having leaks I really wouldn't worry about it. You'd probably see the same thing with commercial stay-dry liners...

Karen.
