  Disinfecting after diarrhea (jessnye)

My 10 month old just had his first bout with stomach flu- vomiting, fever, and gross explosive diarrhea.  How do I disinfect his meos diapers and covers which got diarrhea on them?  I know that the oxygen bleaches are safer for the fabric and are good at removing stains, but having worked in health care, I know they aren't that effective at disinfecting.  Is it harmful to boil fitted diapers with snaps and elastic?  Or is chlorine bleach worse?  And what about the covers?  If I try sunning them, will the rays penetrate into the layers of cloth to kill the germs there?  Thanks!

That's interesting, my 14mo old son is just nearing the end (hopefully) of what seems like a similar flu (his first too, but no fever). I am interested to see what other people think is necessary. I have simply been washing more often because I don't want those gross diapers sitting there very long. And then I have been sunning everything outside. I guess I figured that it is the same child putting on these diapers (not like in health care where its possible some one else could be using the same cloth or something). And the diaper is going back on their bum...I don't think its a risk of reinfection or something, unless they were putting something in their mouth. Just my thoughts. I hope your LO feels better soon!

My DS had a similar bug only once (thankfully).  I never did anything special with the diapers, just washed them on hot as usual.  My thoughts were the same--not going in the mouth, etc.  It doesn't seem to have been a problem, at least for us, and given the number of people on this forum whose kids must have had the nasties at some point, I don't recall having read much of anything about this, which makes me think that most people don't do a whole lot extra with those diapers.
If you want to do something, though, if you have a front-loader with a sanitary cycle, that might be ideal.  Otherwise you could dump a pasta pan of boiling water in with your diapers if you have a top loader, so they will be washed with hotter-than-usual water.  You probably could boil the diapers if you really want to, although that could pose problems for the snaps and/or the elastic.  I do believe people have done it before without huge issues, though.  If bleach would make you feel a lot, one round probably isn't the end of the world for your diapers; just make sure the bleach is diluted before you add the diapers.
There are always TTO and vinegar for mild disinfectant qualities, and the sun, as you noted.

A good long run in a hot dryer will kill just about any bacteria that might be there. Total disinfection probably really isn't necessary since stomach bugs are usually viral and your LO is probably now immune to the one they just had.
