  how many cloth diapers...? (skills73)

Hi...new parents here.. (soon!)

We have a little one on the way and our situation is that we are going to be living in Cuba (teaching there) for 1 year more.  My mother bought us 10 cloth diapers from Mother-ease but I'm wondering if that's going to be enough.  Because it's very difficult to bring in a lot of goods with us (our luggage is already going to be full of baby stuff!) we are looking like we will have to go strictly cloth diaper with our new addition.  I was wondering, does anybody have a suggestion on how many cloth diapers we will need?  We will be drying them in the sun, bringing down some soap nuts with us for cleaning them; however, I'm trying to figure out if we should have 20 or 30 diapers for this first year?  I think my mom got us the mother-ease diapers which are adjustable so they can be used on newborn or later but I'm sure 10 will not be enough.  Keep in mind, once we're down there we won't be able to order any and disposable diapers in Cuba are HORRIBLE quality...any number suggetions on how many we should have just to be safe and make sure we will be covered?  Thank you!

It depends on how often you want to wash them. You'll definitely need more than 10 (average newborn goes through 10 a day, but you'll want more in case your little one exceeds that) I have 16 at the moment and wash every day and a half.

thanks...maybe we'll get 20..nice even number and that should last us without doing a wash every 2 days?

Yeah, 10 is probably not enough for full time cloth, especially for a newborn. 20 is better but still might be close if you're going through 8-10 diapers a day during the early months and want to wash every 2 days. Don't forget that you'll need at least a few clean diapers to use while the dirty ones are washing/drying. Not sure how much rain you can expect in Cuba or if drying indoors will be an option in case of rain, but that's something to keep in mind... Not to mention any times when you may just be very tired or overwhelmed and it takes you longer to get around to hanging your diapers up to dry...

Of course you could just get 20, wash 1 to 1 1/2 days at first and then you can gradually stretch that out as baby gets older and starts going through less diapers. Or maybe supplement your ME stash with some quick drying prefolds or flats. Just a few to tide you over should your MEs not be dry yet...

Also think about getting a few liners for nighttime. Normally I'd say don't worry about that for now, but since you have to plan ahead for the first year then it's worth thinking about now. For the first while the baby will poop often enough that  he/she will be getting changed often that absorbancy won't be a concern. But when the baby is a bit older and has stopped pooping at night then you can start putting more absorbancy into the nighttime diaper in order to not have to change at night.

One tip if you ever do have to use poor quality disposables is to use them in conjunction with your covers (or maybe even your diapers). Putting a cloth diaper cover over top of a disposable can help stop poopy diaper blowouts (the elastic even on good quality disposables just isn't enough a lot of the time).

Karen.

I found 25 or so diapers to be pretty good, including line-drying (but I did have a dryer to fall back on if necessary).  I think that Karen's suggestion to get some flats (or some good-quality pre-folds--did she say that?) is a good idea, since although they may not give you quite the performance of the ME, they will be quicker to dry.  What do Cuban woman do for cloth diapers?  Maybe you can get flats locally and thus not worry about anything but the ME diapers and covers that you can't get locally?  Don't forget the covers--baby may race through covers the first year.  My DS#1 was to the L by 9 months--that's not quite the normal, but it can happen.  Also, something small to pack might be something like some snappis (google it) if you are thinking of supplementing with flats or prefolds, as they can snug up the fit without pins.
