I like to make the liquid so I can just measure in half a cup and not worry about the little bag. I boil a big pot of water (maybe about 8-10 cups of water) and add a handful of nut pieces or nuts. Then I let it boil for 20 minutes or so. Then I strain using a strainer and paper towels to make sure nothing but the liquid gets through. I find that I can even make another half batch with the same nuts, if my nut pieces still look "juicy."
It takes a bit of experimenting to see how dark you need your liquid to be.
