Why don't we use only vinegar to wash dipes? (nakedbabytoes)

Just curious.
We use vinegar to strip.
We use vinegar to naturally fabric soften.
It's a great versatile household cleaner.
It's cheap. It's natural. It's environmentally friendly.
So why is it always used in combination with something else?
Somebody on DiaperSwappers said it has to do with "surfactants", but couldn't elaborate any more than that.
Any ideas?
I love my soapnuts but are having an intact penile issue currently. So I stripped with vinegar(which got me thinking) and boiled them just to be safe.
When we go back to using diapers again(he's nakey now), I wanna make sure we don't get yucky stuff back. I figure if vinegar continually strips them every time I wash them, maybe that's the way to go from now on.
Anybody? Just use vinegar?

I agree that surfactants are what would be missing using just vinegar. Surfactants essentially break up the surface tension of water and allow greases/oils to be washed away by allowing them to essentially be dissolved in water. There's oils in poop so surfactants are what allow that to be truly/completly washed away. Most homemade household cleaners use vinegar as an additive don't they? I know that you can do windows/mirrors with just vinegar and water (that's what I use) and that some use it on floors as well but I don't know that many people or recipes use it totally on it's own.

You could use vinegar in every wash and/or rinse to help keep them build-up free (the vinegar will help the detergent rinse out better) but I wouldn't replace detergent and/or soap nuts with only vinegar.

Karen.
