Do I need to dunk dirty wipes? (econprofessor)

I want to make the switch to cloth wipes, but I'm not sure how they work with BMs. I'm not excited about dunking/spraying a messy wipe (I use a diaper sprayer), and I'm even less excited about having the poop collect in my washing maching. There's got to be an easy solution. What am I missing?

No need to dunk or spray poopy wipes at all. Usually they're not messy enough to worry about. And if they do get real 'chunks' on them (sorry to be so graphic) you can just wipe/drop the chunks onto the diaper before dunking/spraying it (or use a cleanish part of the diaper to wipe off the really messy stuff before starting with the wipes). I used cloth wipes for 9+ years, never sprayed/dunked them and never had poop collect in the washing machine.

Karen.

I agree 100% with PP.  I have never had any collection of poop in my front loader in over 4 years with cloth wipes.  Smooshed up corn and peas, yes, but poop no!  Sorry, couldn't resists!

I've actually been keeping a small roll of toilet paper handy for times when I need to sort of "grab a chunk" of poop during a diaper change, then finish cleaning up with the cloth wipes (and then don't need to rinse them). I guess I figured the toilet paper will disintegrate in my septic tank instead of sitting in a land fill for years like a disposable wipe, but perhaps its not the optimal solution either...

I've always used cloth wipes, and have only rinsed them off once in a blue moon, when truly icky.  I do use the front of the diaper to make a pass over the poopy area, and that takes anything big off, so the wipes, although somewhat poopy, don't have anything that really needs rinsing.  I've never seen a trace of poop in the washing machine.

For the most part, the only time I rinse my wipes is with diarrhea. For some reason those diapers really stink after being washed (not stink like poo, but just not a pleasant smell when my diapers usually smell like nothing) and I feel the need to have as little of that stuff in the washer as possible. I have never had any poop collect in my washer, but have had an ocassional piece of food (my boys don't chew so there are lots of such chunks in their diapers).

I guess I'm in the minority. I spray off my wipes before putting them in the pail. Spraying off the wipes is easier than spraying out the gathers in the Sandy's diapers. It takes like 2 seconds a wipe. But I have "The Potty Pail", so I just slap the wipe flat on the side of the pail, spray. Turn wipe over & slap it flat on the other side & spray again. Done.
Actually, it's so much easier that I try to get as much poo as possible on the wipe instead of the diaper.

Nah, you don't have to spray or dunk them. Cloth wipes work so much better than disposable ones.
