Need suggestions on washing poop... (momo)

Hi mom's! Can any one give me any suggestions on how to wash out the baby poop
from diapers without getting it all over my hands? My 3 month old is exclusively
breastfed and his poop is a runny yellow mustard looking poop and it's really
not that offensive but I definitely do NOT like to get it all over my hands. I
have read that rinsing it out in the toilet is an option but that grosses me out
even more than touching my sons poop. I've also read about a sprayer that
attaches to the toilet fixture but I live in an apartment and we cannot alter
nor change the plumbing fixtures. Is there some other way? So far, I've been
washing it out in the bathroom sink which gets it all over my hands and then I
have to wash out the sink because that's just gross and I don't want germs
everywhere and I change diapers every 1 to 2 hours which most of the diapers
have poop. So as you can imaging, I'm tired of washing the sink 12 times a day!
help, please, anyone!!!!

Can I leave the poop where it is in the diaper and then just wash it out in the
washing machine? That sounds gross too! Okay, maybe I'm being a bit over
dramatic but there's got to be a better way!

If he's exclusively breastfed then you can absolutly just leave it where it is!! Breastfed baby poop is water soluble so it will rinse out very well in your washer and it hardly stinks so it won't cause major odor problems in your pail. Just run a plain cold water pre-rinse before washing and that will rinse out the vast majority of the poop! I never once rinsed or dunked any of my kids diapers while they were still breastfed. Take advantage of this while you still can!!

Now, once he's on solids or formula, then all bets are off and you will have to rinse off the diapers. In your circumstances I would definetly recomend a diaper sprayer. They attach very easily to the back of the toilet and don't really alter the actual plumbing itself. It takes just a few minutes to install and a few minutes to take off! You could also wait to see what kind of poop you'll be dealing with. Some people are lucky enough that the poop is nice and solid and just drops right off the diaper, perhaps with a little shaking. You can also look into disposable liners that you can flush down the toilet. The theory is that the poop goes on the liner and all you do is pick up the liner and flush it down the toilet. This works very well for some people but then you have kids like mine that always have soft poop no matter what they're eating and it inevitably runs off the liner and onto the diaper anyway... Some also use some type of spatula to 'scrape' it off the diaper (obviously reserving it only for that purpose) and into the toilet.

Karen.

definitely leave the poop where it is and throw the diapers into the wash ... run a cold water rinse before adding the soap and doing a regular wash and the poop will pretty much be removed. also, if you are not digging the whole idea of touching the poop diapers (and maybe the pee ones that have been festering for a bit at the bottom of the pail) to load them in the wash, we use one of those silicone pot holders (ours is shaped like a gator head ... works great and always washes clean.

Or line your pail with a mesh liner/pillow case/PUL bag that you can lift up and push inside out into your machine (if you have small pails, you can probably just put them in and dump them).

I love my thick, long gloves for washing out poop! My DD is 2 and well past the easy-poop stage. Using gloves has helped very much. I keep my diaper gloves right by the toilet and would use them even if I had a sprayer.

Just wanted to tell you all a big THANK YOU for all the suggestions and tips and taking the time to answer all my questions. I really appreciate it! You've all made my life easier. I'm using the flushable liners and not washing the diapers in the sink every diaper change...woooo hoooo! It's all better now!

Thank you, thank you, thank you.-Monique (mother of 3 boys)
