I am due this July and am looking into the one-size diapers.  When I look at them I'm a little hesitant to use them on a newborn as I kind of think I may have a smaller baby ..maybe 7lbs...I could be wrong  But what are others doing with their newborns..what are you using and what do you do with the flap around the umbilical cord.

I was thinking of getting the complete one-size package with the medium covers.  I was also going to add 6 newborn diapers with the xs covers.  What do you think?Mom-to-Be-Christine

Sounds good except I would get some S covers for your one-sizes as well.  I had a similar set and loved having the xs sandy's.  My ds is 13.5 lbs and can still fit in them at 4 months.  The one-size are big at first (we were 7 lbs 3 oz) but you can use them for kickin' it around the house and use the cute xs sandy's for going out.  Enjoy!

I used both the S Sandys and OS from 6.5 lbs without any leaks.  By that time, my preemie's cord had fallen off, so it wasn't a concern, so I can't help with that.  I honestly didn't feel that the diapers were really bulky even at that low weight, but I also wasn't trying to get him into pants, just sleepers and one-piece outfits.  (In contrast, I did feel the diapers looked a bit bulky on my hefty DS#1, but he didn't fit into pants even in disposables, so I think everything looked bulky on him, because he was bulky himself!).

Someone who's used the XS Sandys (assume that's what you mean by newborn) might want to double-check my thinking here, but if you are trying to skimp on covers, how about skipping the XS covers--you can use S covers with the XS, but can't use XS covers on anything but XS diapers.  The S covers will be bigger than necessary, but should smoosh down under clothes.  Again, maybe someone who's done this can comment, but the bulk really comes from the diaper, not the cover, so I would think you'd still be able to benefit from the trimmer fit of the XS Sandys while having a cover that you can use on both that and the OS.

This sounds like a good idea...get the o/s with the small covers and get some extra xs Sandys...use the small covers with the xs as well..hopefully that will work well!

You will really want the small covers, for sure!!  I still use them on my 4 month old, 16 pounder.

You may also want to buy some chinese or indian prefolds and a snappi fastener for the first couple months with the small covers from ME.  I went that route and loved the less bulky option for the first months, and didn't find it any more difficult.  Prefolds are only 2 or 3 dollars each, so it's an inexpensive option.

all the best!

Prefolds and flats should give you a trimmer look (though I'm not sure about trimmer than the XS--anyone?), but if you are getting tempted to buy baby clothes, remember that most clothes are cut for disposables and that any cloth is going to be bulkier than that.  So skip the pants and go for one-piece outfits.  I think they're easier to deal with as well, and there are so many cute options, from shortalls, dresses, sleeper-style, etc.

Some people are really bothered by bulk and others aren't; it might be hard to know in advance which you will be!  My husband actually was much better at handling our first son when he was in cloth diapers, as they made him feel more substantial and helped daddy get over his fear of breaking the baby.
