pockets vs fitteds w/ wool covers (Jennifer Carroll)

Hi Ladies,

I have been using OS pocket BG and HH for over a year and then discovered ME. I loved my pockets-didn't mind the stuffing, and they are quicker to put on baby, but the washing is ridiculus. Pre rinse, wash, double rinse, once for the pocket diaper and once for the inserts-8 cycles every two days! Fitteds seem to be easier-3-4 cycles and the covers in baby's laundry.

My baby had a rash on the end of his penis and the doc said cotton might be better since it breathes. I bought 5 cotton and bamboo from here and sure enough it has never come back. I even bought a wool cover last night. Does anyone know if it will fit over Sandy's bamboo and ME OS cotton? This combo seems the most natural to me, and I read at Diaper Pin an article that states that PUL might leach chemicals onto baby skin. My baby is 18 months now, so if I could start over -I'd use ME entirely since pockets have PUL in them. I do use the AF covers, but with a cotton diapers under. Pockets have fleece and skin gets hot in the summer, and its made from plastic-not breathable. Does anyone like one style of daiper over another? Do most moms use a combo?

Thanks!

I personally stay away from pockets now. I too loved them at first but the washing required to keep the stinkies and repelling away was just too much. I would even say that honestly fitteds should require only 1-2 cycles every two days. All you really need is a pre-rinse (just one rinse, not an entire cycle) and then a hot wash with an extra rinse at the end.

Oh, and by the way, it's not really necessary to wash pocket shells and inserts seperatly. Never even heard of that till about a year or two ago and I've been doing pockets for about 7 years. Maybe my fleece pilled a little more, it's possible, but washing seperatly is totally unnecessary and just not worth the trouble in my opinion.

As for the wool cover, it depends on the style, fit and size of the cover if it will fit over a Sandy's. Aristocrats and Sugar-Peas fit well, so will shorties and longies.

The Airflow is PUL so doesn't breath really but the design does allow quite a bit of air inside the cover (through the side, the gap between the snaps allows a reasonable amount of air inside). It's nothing like a wool cover of course but it's better than some other PUL covers.

Karen.
