question Overnight Overload (riveras)
Posted: 9:31:29 am on 5/7/2009 Modified: Never

My son is almost 21 months and has never had a problem with his cloth diapers.  Now he wakes up every night sopping wet by around 3:30.  He wears the cloth liner at night, but it isn't enough.  I have thought about adding a second liner or having him wear two diapers, but I am afraid that would be too much material between his little legs.  Does anyone have a suggestion?  Is this typical for his age?
Thanks!

Putting in another liner probably won't bother him at all... I have put on two diapers and that works too!  I have now discovered that a MEOS with a newborn prefold is our best solution.

I would just try a few things and see how it works... he may also be ready to sit on the potty before bed and pee a little (he's young, but maybe you will be lucky!).  That skill development has helped us greatly in keeping nighttime diapers less wet.

good luck!

Yes, absolutly no problem in adding a second liner. I've often even used 3 liners or double diapered for my heavy wetting little ones! If keeping bulk to a minimum is really important to you, you could always look into more absorbant fabrics like bamboo. The bamboo liners will absorb the same amount but are trimmer than cotton. Hemp is also more absorbant than cotton...

Karen.

Thanks!  I will try the potty before bed method and see how it goes.  If he is too young for it, I will try adding a liner.  I really didn't even consider the potty yet, but it's worth a try.

Hello,

My son is the same age as yours and I had the same problem a few months ago. I was already using 2 liners but it wasn't enough. Someone on the Forum suggested putting the third liner outside the diaper to minimize the bulk. I tried that and it worked like a charm. I fold the liner and place it at the front, where it gets more wet, on top of the diaper. It's held in place by the cover. You may want to try.

As for the potty, it has helped us, too. We got a cheap and small one from Ikea, my son loves using it since we babysat a neighbor who was potty-trained and he saw her using it. He doesn't always pee when he sits on it, but he often does. I figure that's a good start! And since we started doing that, the diaper is a lot less soaked even when I forget to put the extra liner.

Good luck!

My DD is 15 months and I use two snap in liners also for her at night time! I've started to wean her from her night time bottle and have since taken one liner away.

I use a toddle-ease and one liner at night. The ones I use are cotton so they are bulkier than the L Sandy's we use during the day, but the boys don't seem to mind. One very rarely do I have leaks at night, but I often have wicking at the waist (thus, I search hard for pajamas that come with two pairs of pants and one shirt). My boys can't pee on the potty at all despite interest. I do breastfeed before bed and through the night. I suggest try using another liner. If you are concerned about the bulk, you could try using just bamboo liners at night.
