question Newborn Diaper Problem (motherhubbard)
Posted: 11:31:05 pm on 5/16/2009 Modified: Never

I have a one week old newborn who weighs about 6lb 11oz.  We have some one size diapers from her older sister and some small airflow covers.  The covers are too big and she would just leak through the legs and waist.  I want to get her some diapers to start using as right now we are doing newborn disposables that are even too large.  I am putting the cloth diaper over to hold the disposable in place!

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Interesting. I used MEOS at birth and my son was 6lb 12oz. Sure, the legs gapped and I thought that there was no way they would work but they did!
Maybe it was just his build but I was surprised I had no leaks.
Anyway, you could try XS sandy's. Or use newborn prefolds with snappys until the OS fit better.
But whatever you do, they grow super fast so this won't be an issue for long.
Congrats on that baby!

I, too, was able to use OS and S Airflows from 6.5 lbs with my scrawny preemie.  I didn't think they'd work, but I was having so many leaks with the preemie/newborn disposables that I figured it was worth a shot, and zero leaks.  As PP suggested, though, perhaps it is about baby build?
I'm sure the XS Sandys would work wonderfully for you; it's possible that S Sandys would also offer some advantage to you because of the the more fitted design.  And of course if you go with the prefolds you can always use them later for boosting night diapers, etc.

I loved using newborn prefolds... and now I use them as a night liner for my 2 year old.  and I agree that the cover may look big, but it may just work!
