Okay ladies, I'm a newbie and I need some help. I have 3 boys and one on the way in July. I will be switching to cloth when baby comes to diaper my (then) 19 month old and the new little one (can't switch before that for older son because we live in Mexico and shipping is outrageous.) My Mom will bring down my "stash" when she comes the week after baby is born.
I have already bought 12 LG Sandy's used for my 19 mo. as well as 3 small AF covers for the baby coming.
Here's what I am thinking. PLEASE tell me if this is too much, not enough, or if you would switch things around. Any advice appreciated! Since I live in Mexico, once I order it's pretty much a done deal, I can't just grab another cover here or there or switch things out as I need them. So, I just want to make wise choices from the start! Please also consider that I won't be able to buy more cd's until we come back to the states to visit in December when baby is 5 mos. and ds will be 2.
12 regular Onesize diapers (to use for both kids) 12 regular snap liner inserts 3 more small AF covers for baby 4 large AF for 19 month old to go over Sandy's and OS 12 lg Sandy's inserts
I also want to get some pre-folds for nb size to small size and use those interchangeably with the OS for the baby. I think I would get 2 nb Thirsties covers and 1 nb Bummi's super snap cover I would buy some pins and Snappis as well.
Is this enough as far as covers for nb? I will be doing sposies some in the beginning too.
Will this carry me for 5 mos. for both kids until I have access to more?
Do I NEED some AIO's? We are missionaries and I am on a budget, so I don't need "the perfect stash" and I don't mind washing each day if I need to. Can you just help me figure out what's reasonable?
Thanks soooo much for your help!!

Hmmm, the only thing I would perhaps consider is wether you really need 24 liners (12 Sandy's and 12 One-Size). The newborn won't need inserts for a while (not till he/she stops pooping at night and then you can start boosting the nighttime diaper a little to go longer periods between changing). It's unlikely that the 19 month old will need an insert in each diaper either. This occasionally happens with heavy wetting toddlers using the One-Size but almost never with the Sandy's (it's a little more absorbant).
So the only time you're likely to need liners is for nighttime for the toddler and then later on for the baby. Maybe occasionally for the toddler if he/she is a very heavy wetter. So 12 liners would be ample for that, especially if you wash every day or two. You could chose which liner you prefer, it's not critical to use snap-in liners in the One-Size just laying in a Sandy's liner will work fine. And there's no reason you couldn't just lay a snap-in liner in the Sandy's...
Also, I don't know exactly how big the Thirsties covers are but I would consider that there's a very good chance they won't fit over the One-Size diaper. Folding the front flap down gives it more bulk than other diapers so a tiny newborn cover isn't likely to fit... If I recall correctly the nb Bummis covers wouldn't have fit either... If you need something for the prefolds and are planning on fastening them anyway (snappis or pins) then the Airflow will work fine and a size small will last longer than a nb. And unless you're getting an amazing deal on the Bummis or Thirsties, I'd just stick with Airflows or Rikkys. I've used the Bummis a few times over the years and although they're a good, durable cover (and admitedly cuter than the ME ones) they just don't match the bullterproofness of an Airflow!

Oh, one thing I would consider adding is some stay-dry liners of some type. I would highly recomend just getting some plain old cheap fleece and cutting it to size. Cheap and super easy! No sewing necessary as it doesn't unravel. You lay the fleece on top of the diaper and it will let moisture through to the diaper while drying almost instantly (fleece doesn't absorb so dries extremely quickly). Great for nighttime, sensitive skin, protecting diapers against poop stains (fleece hardly stains at all) and even makes poop diaper cleanup easier because poop doesn't tend to stick to fleece as much as terry cloth.
Obviously you don't need to special order that but I'm nut sure how available that would be in Mexico so perhaps your family can bring you a yard or so... Or you could purchase some, ME makes some as well.

Great! Someone gave me some polyester cloths that she uses for stay dry liners. Will this work or should I definitely get fleece? Also, will the LG Sandy's liners fit inside a OS on a smaller baby or should I just stick to the snap in liners? Is six of each reasonable? Do you think I should also get a couple of med AF covers or will the small carry me to 5 mos. with the baby? Do I need 6 small AF for baby or should I maybe get just 4 sm and 2 med? Thanks for your help Karen! |

If she uses them for stay-dry liners then they'll surely work. It's the fact that fleece is made from polyester that makes them work this way so I don't see why it wouldn't work.
Pretty sure the Sandy's liners will fit inside the One-Size, if I remember correctly they're pretty much the same size anyway. You could check with ME to be sure though. Although at worst you could always just get the snap-in One-Size liners and use them in the Sandy's as well. Or fold a liner that's too big (they'll both be too long for the One-Size with the flap folded down anyway). 6 of each would work too, although you're probably just complicating your stash without really gaining anything. If it helps the decision process, the snap-in liners are ever so slightly more expensive.
Hmmm, good point about the covers. It's hard to say, I can't remember when the smalls stopped fitting my girls. But I was using the x-small and then small Sandy's so it would be different with the One-Size anyway. I will say though that many people find they can easily skip at least one size. Either they skip the mediums and go straight to the M/L or they start with the mediums and then skip the M/L. There's not a ton of difference between the two and there's always a fair amount of overlap between sizes.
Either way though, you could easily do just 4 small covers and then a couple bigger ones. Typically you only need one or two covers per day at most so 4 should be plenty. I found that I preferred to buy fewer of the really small covers and then more of the larger covers. They're in the small ones for such a short period that it didn't seem worth it to buy too many. Besides, when they're little their pee is so inoffensive that it's super easy to just quickly wash/rinse one out in the sink if you're running low.

I agree with pp that 4 sm covers would be enough (I did ok with just 2 sm). I would also consider getting a medium cover or two instead of the smalls because your baby might be in med size before you are able to get more covers. I also agree with pp that you don't need 12 snap in liners. There are two sizes of liner (sm and lg) and on a newborn you may not need a liner at all (unless you have a heavy wetter). All in ones are nice to have but not needed. You may want to have one or two for convenience. I think that the sandys, onesize and covers are a better investment for your money. I have 2 boys in diapers (They are 19 months apart). I wash diapers every day. I have a bigger stash than what you are proposing that you will have, but I like to have clean diapers. I think you will be ok with the amount of diapers/prefolds that you will have. Take care, Elizabeth

| Thank you ladies so much for your input! I think I will reduce the number of small covers and get a couple of mediums. Thanks for taking the time! |

| If you get in a pinch on the liner thing, just use a prefold folded in the night time diaper etc. I have heard of people using their cloth wipes too. This way you can save money, only get a few liners and figure out what you need. |
