Hey. I have a 17 lb, 4 month old baby boy. He has major thunder thighs and is already out of med. covers. All he is wearing right now is one piece romper type outfits. I would really love some variety! He so far cannot wear any hand me down shorts from my older son cause of the bulk in the crotch, and his bigger bottom. The bulky crotch seems to be the hardest obstacle to overcome! Can anyone give me specific brand names of shorts that have worked in the past, with OS?? Maybe fuller in the bottom?? I'm struggling here!
Thanks! |

This doesn't help, but my chunky DS couldn't really wear separate shorts until the next summer, when he was 18 months or so (then 3T were very nice, and he's still wearing them four summers later at 43 4.5 and 42 lbs because the waists still fit--they're just a little less like bermudas and more like regular shorts now!). I had a cute pair of OshKosh 9-12 months that I could shoehorn him into at 6 months and 22 lbs, but he couldn't really move so I had to give up on them (alas). We really did just do the one-piece outfits because they gave so much more flexibility for fit. I haven't tried any of them on a similarly-sized baby, but have you looked at the Geranimals line (seem them at Walmart)? I've seen a few elastic-waist shorts that look pretty generous, though I'm not sure how low the sizes go. |

| Any chance you're in Canada? On the off chance you are then the Joe Fresh line at Loblaws has shorts with fuller bottoms. Or you could buy size 1T or 2T shorts because they will probably fit at the waist with the diaper bulk but you won't have to worry about rolling them up. They'll probably fit next summer too. |

| Thank you. I havent checked out Geranamals, but I will. Boys have such little variety in clothing as it is, now with CD we are even more limited! |

We loved short overalls as well. Similar to one piece rompers but it does give you a different look... They're usually roomier at the hips/waist/butt, have a higher rise and there's no elastic at the waist as well. Plus the adjustables straps give you a little more size leeway.
You could also buy some cute covers for summertime and just put a cute matching t-shirt. ME has some decent prints and colors.
Lots of work-at-home moms make fleece or wool shorties that you could use as well. Kind of like shorts and a cover all in one, lots come in cute colors and patterns to boot! It sounds hot to put fleece or wool on a baby but they're so breathable (wool is obviously more breathable than fleece but fleece is still more breathable than PUL and even more than the plastic in disposables that everyone else's child will be in). Plus the fact that there's no clothing over top and that they're like shorts means that his skin will still be plenty exposed to air...

thanks karen! i've never checked out shorties before- so you use them instead of a cover? do they not leak through? |

Well, that's not an easy answer. I guess I'd say it depends... Fleece and wool isn't waterproof the same way PUL is so construction and materials used is key if you want something really waterproof, especially when talking fleece. Wool as long as it's lanolized properly then it should be fine and there's lots of cute wool shorties out there!
Fleece is a little different. If you get a one layer thin fleece cover then it may be prone to compression leaks if the diaper gets really wet. Essentially some wetness could possibly get squeezed through if baby is sitting with his weight on a pretty wet diaper.
Now it's fairly easy to combat this though by using different kinds of fleece or layering it with PUL in the middle. Some fleece is thicker so less vulnerable to compression leaks, some is also treated especially to be more water-repellant than regular fleece. Some also use two layers of fleece with a layer of PUL sandwiched in the middle... If you're concerned I'd ask about exactly how the cover is made and how likely it is to be vulnerable to compression leaks.

As for where to find them, I'd start on Diaperswappers. I'm not as up-to-date as I used to be on where to find good wahm made cloth diaper supplies but I know that a fair amount sell their wares on DS so it's a good place to start.

| so is the main purpose of shorties to serve as a cover over a cd, or as nice fitting "shorts" over a cover? |

They're covers for over diapers. But they're in the shape of shorts (or pants if you look at 'longies') and so darn cute that you use them as clothing. So all you use is the shorties, no other cover and no other clothing on the bottom. Some also use them as pj bottoms when their little one needs a really bulky nighttime diaper and they're having trouble finding pjs that fit over the bulk.

Hi, I just wanted to tell you that I use ME diapers and Knit wool covers for Mama's and babies on this forum. My covers work very well. They are 100% wool and I use 2 strands of wool to make my covers. Most wool covers can not be used for naps or over night, because I use thick wool they work better and protect leaks longer. I can make you some if you like. I also have pictures of covers I have made and sold in the past if you want to see them. I also make cute skirties for girl babies. -Jamie |
