I know most bags come with half shells (more or less) and I was just wondering how many of those do people use per wash..Some bags say 4-5, some say 6-7....

also, for how many washes are a bag of shells good for?  How do you know when they are kaput?

Thanks!

We use 4 plus a few drops of essential oil. They are good for us for 3-4 washes. We buy from laundrytree.com and they have lots of good info.

I'm using a small front loader and 4 soap nuts (8 halves) and my diapers aren't coming out of the machine clean <shrug>.

I use about 4 whole soapnuts. But I do not throw them into the machine. Instead, I put the soapnut bag into a mug of boiled water and brew a "tea" for about 5 minutes. Then I squeeze the bag to get maximum soapnut solution into the tea. This is the only way I can seem to get enough cleaning power from the soapnuts. Putting them into the machine, for me, never seems to realease the saponin enough and the diapers will smell. But not with the tea!

I also make a tea. But I boil 4 cups of water with one cup of soap nuts for 20 minutes then strain it when it has cooled. I add tea tree or lavender and store it in a container by the washing machine. It does work better than putting the soap nuts into the washer.
