Hey Everyone,
We have a 3 week old baby girl and have a stash of bamboo MEOS. Her umbilical stump fell off (part is remaining) so we tried the MEOS on Sunday. The actual diaper goes below her belly button, but the small AF cover does not, and the left over stump was gooey, so we are back to sposies for a bit.
Being totally new to CDs, I left the diaper on for 3 hours, like we do with sposies and she soaked right through the diaper. It did not leak past the cover, but the inside of the cover was wet. I now realize we have to change her more often in CDs, but my question is, what do we do about night time?
Right now, she is up every 3-4 hours for a feeding, but she would be soaked through by that time. Putting in the snap in liners seems crazy at this point. Do we have a super wetting baby??
Also, any tips for getting the legs right so we don't have poo leaks?
Thanks so much |

Assuming these are new diapers, how often did you wash them? New diapers need to be washed usually several times (in hot water with detergent, although you only need a smidge for prewashing) to wash away the natural oils so they can absorb properly. I've heard that this is slightly less critical with bamboo in the sense that they are supposed to be useable after just 2-3 washes but they still won't achieve maximum absorbency till they've been washed about 10 times.
That said, 3-4 hours may indeed be a little long. I'm surprised she doesn't need changing before then just because she's pooped. Newborns and small infants typically poop so often that absorbency isn't an issue. But I'd say every 2 hours is a good guideline. I can't imagine that she sleeps for 3-4 hours, wakes for a feed and then is right back to sleep is she? If she does sleep for long periods like that and she's still saturating a diaper even after you're sure it's been prewashed enough, then maybe you could consider a liner. Honestly though, for a newborn to sleep that long without waking and without pooping would be pretty unusual. If she does, count yourself very very lucky!! Most newborns sleep a lot but usually only in painfully small increments!!
Remember also that it's normal for the outside of the diaper to feel wet and perhaps for the cover to be a little damp as well. The diaper will feel wet outside any time baby wets, even if it's just a little, the whole purpose of the cover is to keep this wetness from touching clothing. We're so used to disposables that many parents new to cloth feel there must be something wrong if the outside of the diaper is wet, when really it's totally normal. Now, if the whole entire diaper (front, sides & back) are saturated, that's a whole other thing. If the whole diaper is saturated then yes you do need to consider changing more often or if that's really impossible (ie baby is sleeping and hasn't pooped - poopy diapers must be changed asap even if baby is sleeping and even in disposables) then you can add a liner for absorbency.
Oh, and I'd maybe give the cloth another shot even if the whole umbilical stump hasn't fallen off. If the wet diaper isn't touching the stump then I'd say the gooeyness may just be some slight secretions from the stump healing. The really critical part is that the wet diaper doesn't touch, but if you feel the cover is really making a difference you could always try folding it down so the stump is outside. Combine that with more frequent changes and the diapers absorbing more from a few more prewashes and I'm sure the cloth will be fine.

Thanks for your informative reply Karen! I washed the dipes 3x in hot water with a bit of detergent in our front loader. I will try washing them a few more times to increase absorbency. The diaper was totally wet, all of it, so maybe I have not got all of the oils out yet.
Our baby girl only poos once a day - and it is always a doozy (and usually at 3 a.m.), so we change her immediately after she finishes. She is really loud about it (lovely way to wake up, with someone grunting beside you - ha!!), so we never leave her in a poopy diaper for more than it takes for her to finish (sometimes 20 mins). I think I will try the liner to see if that is better for night, to see if we can stretch the night time changes to 3 hours. I am totally ok with changing her more in the day.
Thanks so much for your advice and tips |

| I can't comment on the stump but I can comment that I change my son's diaper frequently! I used a diaper service the first 4 months and I was always requesting more diapers. He peaked around 5-8 weeks old at 20 diapers a day. Now at 5 months old, he goes through 10-12 diapers a day. He doesn't like a wet diaper and cries when he is wet/dirty. I think frequent diaper changes prevent diaper rash. At night time, I fold up a liner and put that inside his diaper. To avoid poo leaks, try to make sure the diaper is completely inside the diaper cover. I have noticed that the MEOS seems to have a good edge on it so I haven't had any poo leaks. However, I do prefer the Rikki covers with the gusseted legs to keep the diaper inside. I can sometimes see the diaper hanging out of the AF cover legs so I'm still getting used to those. My diaper service sold me ME Rikki diaper covers so that's how I got started on ME. |
