Hi there,
My husband and I have decided to switch from disposables to cloth.  We have a two year old and are expecting another baby at the end of July.  I've done tons of research on the web about the different types of cloth diapers and finally want to begin making purchases.  A lot of people say to vary your stash with different types of diapers but I'm tempted to buy the MEOS Complete Package and be done with it.  I've read so many great things about ME it seems like a safe bet but I'd love some feedback before taking the plunge.  To all you experienced CD mamas out there, do you think this would be a wise decision?  Or should I try a few types first?

Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer!

Personally I think you're fine just ordering the package. I think ordering a variety at first is a good thing if you're confused about what you think you'll need or want, but if you're pretty confident that this is what you'll like then I say go for it! I've tried quite literally dozens of brands of diapers, covers, pockets etc over the last 10+ years of cloth diapering and I've always come back to ME. My last babies were almost exclusively ME (I had some pockets that I came to regret buying) and if I were to have a fifth child (which I'm NOT! LOL!) it would be exclusively Mother-Ease! They're not the fanciest or prettiest diapers around (although even that is getting much better with colored diapers and more color choices in covers) but they're still pretty darn cute and you just can't beat them when it comes to being totally leakproof and amazingly durable!

If you are hesitating I would personally recomend getting one of those trial type 'rental' packages that many cloth diapering stores offer. You pay a small rental fee (which you can often use afterwards as a credit towards a purchase once you make up your mind) and can use a variety of diapers for a week or two to see what you prefer. Saves the cost of having to buy all these different diapers only to find out that you only really like one kind anyway. Now, I will say that for online sales ME has exclusive rights to their product so you won't find any online cloth retailers that offer these trial packages with ME products. If you have a brick 'n mortar store near you that offers these packages you can go in person to ask as many carry ME to sell in their stores even if they can't do it online. And if not you can just get an ME trial pack with one or a couple diapers you'd like to try. It's a pretty cheap pack that contains one diaper, one liner and one cover so people can give it a try. Online the trial pack is only the cotton One-Size diaper with an Airflow but you can call to get one with a Sandy's diaper, a different fabric or a different cover.

Karen.

Hi,
I have 2 children in cloth.  I changed over to cloth when my older child was 16 months and the baby wasn't born yet.  I started with one size, but I also bought some sandys  (xs, s and lg) after. I have tried the unbleached, organic and bamboo fabrics. My favourite is the bamboo in both my onesize and sandys but the other fabrics are great (just not as trim).
In my opinion Motherease have a great product that you can use for more than one child (they guarantee it for one child from birth to potty training.)  The onesize is great to have because you can use it for both the baby and the toddler.  I have purchased other diapers (pocket diapers) but my most durable and reliable diapers are motherease. (They definitely hold in the bm's, big or little ones LOL). I have not had a leak on my children's clothes when they were in Motherease.
In my opinion I would get the complete package and just do a trial for the other brands/kinds of diapers if you think that you will need them.
If you have any questions, the people that answer the phones and take the orders are very friendly and can answer your questions.  They also have a fabric sample sheet that gives you a small swatch of each fabric (if you wanted to feel them first).

I did just that: I acted on the advice of my neighbour and the moms on this forum and got the OS package. It will be especially nice for you to get the One-Size, as you will be able to use them on both the 2-year old and the newborn. They say it fits from 8 pounds, but we used it from day 3 on my 7 pounder.

One thing to think of: 24 diapers may be tight with 2 in diapers depending on how often you wash, on how many diapers you use on your older (we used about 10-12 a day with our newborn, about 7 a day on our 2-year-old) and on how you dry (obviously line-drying takes longer, and bamboo dries slower than cotton).

You could always complement your complete package with XS or S Sandy's for the newborn, like buy a dozen of those, which would give you a trimmer fit for the new one. Or you could buy the convenience package and have all OS - they work fine on tiny babies, some people just find them too bulky. Personally, I had XS Sandy's and preferred the OS, but a lot of people just love the XSs. You will most likely have to wash every day at first anyway simply because your washer won't take more than a certain number of diapers.

Good luck and don't hesitate to ask more questions!

Thank you so much for all your feedback!!  I really appreciate it.  I think we will go ahead with a ME package and I'll likely increase the number of diapers we purchase (thanks for that tip - I hadn't thought of needing more with two in diapers).  It just seems so much simpler to deal with the same diaper and I'd like to streamline the process as much as possible.  I'm grateful for the insight and will probably be back with more questions.

Thanks again!

I think that for many of us CDing becomes so enjoyable that it's almost like a hobby, and then we'll sometimes try diapers in different types because we want to see what they're like, how they work, etc., but I certainly think that for ease of adoption having one type would make things _much_ easier to get used to.
I have mostly OS but some Sandys as well.  I do think that with two in diapers having mostly OS is a great way to go because you don't have to keep track of how many clean diapers for each kid--with a 22-month-old and a newborn I didn't need anything else to think about!  :-)

I started out with the ME complete package and then discovered diaperswappers and decided to try and bunch of different things. I have sold every fitted I tried and gone back to my ME because I like them best. GO figure. I've never had a leak.

Thanks again for your great feedback and help!  I feel much more confident about ordering a package and sticking with one brand after reading your replys.  Thanks for sharing your great experiences with ME.  I do have one more question before I order.  My daughter will be potty training in the near (or not-so-near) future and I wondered if Sandies can be used like training pants.  It looks like a pull-up in the pictures and I wondered if it could serve a dual purpose.  If so, I might order both OS and Sandys.  Any thoughts?

Oops!  I just noticed that a variation of my question is being covered in a recent post.  I'll check that out instead.

Thanks again!  I'm very grateful for the advice.

I've been able to use the OS and Sandys as pull-ups with my 27-lb 2.5-year-old.  They are not, however, something he could manage by himself, though how much of that is him and how much is the diaper, it's hard to say!  Neither would have worked for pulling up with my super chunk#1, so it really is dependent on the child's build.  The Sandys is cut a little more generously, so I think more people have luck with using that as a pull-up than the OS.  With either, though, to get water-proofness you'll need to have a cover on, as well.
Personally, I haven't really felt the need for training pants with either of my sons, but as you'll see in other threads, much of that comes down to parental preference and child personality.
