question getting started (sonjamama)
Posted: 2:40:32 pm on 6/24/2009 Modified: Never

Hi! I just received my MEOS the other day, and I have a couple questions before getting started. Firstly, how many times should I wash them before I put them on my baby? I understand that this increases absorbancy...do I dry them in between washes or does that matter?

Also, the ME information sheet says only to wash 8-10 diapers at a time. How important is this? Do most people follow this guideline?

I'm planning on doing a dry pail. Should I rinse them first (my baby is breastfed)?

I think that's it for now. I'm new to CD so I'm sure there will be more questions as we get started.

Thanks!

How often you need to prewash depends on the kind of fabric your dipaers are. If they're unbleached they should probably be washed in hot with a smidge of detergent about 4-6 times. They'll keep getting more absorbent for a while after that but they should be plenty useable by then. Bamboo is probably about the same thing whereas bleached (white) diapers probably only need maybe 2-3 at most (the bleaching process helps remove a lot of the oils which is what impedes absorbency). I've seen some people say that you should dry in between but frankly I just can't see how that helps. The whole point is to remove the natural oils in the fabric and drying just doesn't do that...

As for washing 8-10 diapers at a time this is for prewashing only, not when you're washing dirty diapers. And yes, I'd say it's fairly important. If you wash too many at a time for the first few washes your lint filter will be overwhelmed and you'll get little lint balls everywhere. I speak from experience unfortunetly...

I definetly wouldn't recomend rinsing an exclusively breastfed baby's poopy diapers. As long as they're exclusively breastfed their poop is water soluble (hence will rinse away in a pre-rinse before washing) and hardly stinks (hence won't severely stink up your pail). Once baby is on a significant amount of formula or solids then all bets are off but until then I say why complicate your life... You'll almost surely get those super bright, almost neon, breastfed baby poop stains (which you'd still likely have even if you rinsed) but just lay them in the sun for a few hours and they'll totally disappear! It's hard to believe until you've seen it for yourself but sunlight truly works wonders on stains, especially breastfed poop stains.

HTH,
Karen.

Just want to add two things:
1) I rinsed all bf poo diapers (so that would be nearly every feed for almost six months, eek!), but still had vibrant orange diapers, so I don't think it helped at all for not getting stains.  After just one time of line-drying outside, though, they looked brand-new again.  It truly was amazing.
2) I hadn't heard that I didn't need to rinse bf poo with #1, but had by the time we had #2, so figured I'd save myself the trouble.  Only he was one of those babies who went only every week to 10 days.  While catastrophic in effect, his poops were not as runny, so they didn't actually completely rinse out in the washer (well, they did come off the diapers just fine, but after finding a few "clean" poop remnants in the door gasket, I decided I'd better rinse).  So if you do end up with one of those, you may have to rinse bf poos off, but otherwise I completely agree with Karen--do a pre-rinse and save yourself the trouble!

Thanks for all the advice! I tested the sun drying method on some onesies that had stains and it really is magic. In the summertime, anyway. I don't see myself out there in -20 weather hanging up my diapers...

I've just finished the pre-washing and am about to test drive my first cloth diaper...(or my son is).
