  AIO's - Help! (newtoitall)

After alot of thought and discussion with my husband it seems the only way we will be using cloth is if we go with AIO's. Everyone say's that motherease is the best however I sent them an email and asked what the life expectancy of their AIO's is if I'm using them exclusively in a rotation of 26 diapers, line drying most of the time with a few MEOS as back ups and they told me I could expect them to last 4 months! Does anyone else use ME AIO's exclusively or wash them often enough to tell me if 4 months is really all I will get out of them? I've read on Diaper Pin that people use their bum genius AIO's for more then one child - what is the difference with ME's? I know using AIO exculsively isn't the most popular option but it's what we are going to go with. I'm just wondering if anyone has any insight on Mother ease's AIO's or if there is another brand anyone may recommend? TIA

I suspect that the reason for ME's response is that they guarantee their covers for something like 4 months, and the cover is going to be the weak point in a AIO.  Now, most of us get years and years of use out of our covers, but they are only guaranteed for that shorter period of time (I have some airflows that have been going strong for four years now).  Unlike with a two-part diapering system, however, with and AIO the cover is getting washed with each diaper change, so it is subject to quite a bit more wear, while with the two-part approach one might use one or two covers per day.

I personally have no experience with the ME AIOs to be able to comment on them, but you're right, I certainly think that their full-time use isn't very common among users on this forum (though they come up in several recent threads, taking about full-time use).
I have a friend who loved using FuzziBunz, but again, haven't used them myself.

I agree, I think that's a big underestimate based on what they actually guarantee as opposed to what most users experience. They only guarantee covers for something like 4-6 months and diapers for the diapering period of one child as well. But the vast majority of us find that they last MUCH longer than that in reality. ME can't know how people are going to use their diapers so they have to give super conservative estimates basically to cover themselves in terms of guaranteeing the quality of their product. For example someone who only has 4-5 diapers that are soaked in bleach, washed at least once a day in a harsh detergent + bleach and then always dried on hot in the dryer may indeed find that the diapers only last through one child.

I think it's hard for anyone to say how long AIOs will last even if they're very well cared for. Part of the problem is that people who use them full-time are uncommon so there's not much real world full-time experience to give you an idea of what others have experienced.

FWIW, I have used ME AIOs and I loved them. I only used mine for reluctant sitters and going out but they were great. And when I sold them they were pretty much like new.

I would definetly expect that they'd last way more than a few months. At least through the amount of time you need them for one child, I'm confident of that. Beyond that, I think you may be able to use them for a second child if you really care well for them but that's pure speculation.

Do you mind if I ask why it must be AIOs? Maybe we can help alleviate some of the concerns regarding a two part system. There are actually advantages to using the two part system (other than the lesser expense and longer lifetime of diapers).

Would you and hubby maybe be open to maybe starting with AIOs for the time you're adjusting to parenthood and then switch to a seperate cover/diaper when your little one outgrows the size small? Or maybe start with a couple AIOs and a couple seperate diapers/covers to give them a real world test before you commit to either one. Anyway, just some thoughts...

Karen.

Thanks for the advice Ladies!

I figured they must last longer then 4 months - I mean I've read about some people using the same MEOS through 5 children and I realize AIO's aren't going to last like that but that say's something about workmanship and quality in general.

I've bought a couple AIO's, a Sandy's a few OS's and definetly plan on trying everything before we committ to something but as my dear hubby has NEVER changed a diaper before I think we will be starting with AIO's lol. By the time we make it into the next size (which I'm assuming he'll stay in longer) I'm hoping my dh is ready to move over to Sandy's with Airflow's as they will definetly last longer and will be more absorbant.

Just want to add that my DH had never, ever changed a diaper before we had our own kids.  We used disposables for the first two weeks and then switched to the OS with a few S Sandys.  There was a bit of a learning curve, but not as much as we anticipated.  I'd thought I might have to sort of ease into cloth because I was expecting that it would be more work, more leaks, etc.  I was so pleasantly surprised to be WRONG WRONG WRONG!  By the time we switched, DS was already blowing out of disposables, so after the first OS, we never went back to disposables--I had to return a couple of packs to the store. No easing-in period--they just worked so much better and resulted in less work because I was only changing a diaper, not DS's clothes, and mine.
Because they're really the only diapering that DH has ever used, he actually is very reluctant to change a disposable.  They are daunting to him--too many variables on how to set the waist!  He likes knowing the appropriate diaper settings and snap, snap, snap, snap.  Because cloth diapers worked so much better for us during that bf poo stage, DH is actually the one who suggested that we try travelling with them, rather than using disposbles and bracing for the poopsplosions.  Regarding poopsplosions, though, sometimes I think the only thing that saved us what the two layer system--two layers of elastic to stop escapes!  I'm not sure how super-pooper would have done with an AIO, but then, I think he was especially gifted in that area . . .  :-)

I used my ME AIOs through 2 children, and then used them on my daycare kids.  It took about 4 years of constant use for them to start getting threadbare.

I bought used one aio and its awsome, I wish I had more, but I keep missing the sales at the used forum.  I have tons of diapers so I didn't need the aio, but anyway, I bought this diaper used way back in November, and well, my kiddo is 9 months old, and the aio, is just like new, works great, and we do use it regularly, and wash it regularly
