Hello. Are there any other dipes out there that are more baby shaped in the crotch? I would always use the ME AF covers, but maybe try a different kind of less bulky dipe? Just talking about the crotch, how it hangs low. Also, anyone have problems with bow-legs? An 85 yr old woman brought that to my attention, and now i'm wondering!!
Thanks! |

I'm not sure about other diapers but if you're using the One-Size perhaps the Sandy's might be a bit better? The One-Size crotch is made to accomodate babies up to 35lbs so it's going to be larger. Of course the advantage to this is that there's less chances of poop getting out of the diaper just because there's more diaper coverage kwim? Or maybe consider getting some bamboo diapers, they're significantly less bulky. Prefolds (if not folded in front) can be less bulk as well, maybe you could get a few to supplement your stash. Pockets are usually a little less bulky as well but honestly they're so fussy to wash and keep from repelling/stinking that I don't personally think it's worth it (that's just my 2 cents though, pockets are quite popular so obviously not everyone agrees with me).
As for bow-leggedness, it's perfectly normal in young babies (no matter what diaper they're wearing) and naturally corrects itself with time as baby approaches walking age. If it doesn't it's almost always due to rickets (vitamin D defiency, which is very rare in the western world). Bulky cloth diapers perhaps give the appearance of bow legs but it can't cause it. The bulk is actually *good* for hip developement. Parents of babies who have problems with proper hip development are advised to either use cloth diapers, double diaper or use a special brace to increase bulk between the legs.
Karen.

| Moms/grandmas who have been there and done that can be great sources of wisdom, but can also cause unneeded worrying. Both of my boys, esp. DS#1, were bow-legged, and an older woman told me that I shouldn't be letting him walk as much as we were (he was walking holding onto hands around 6 months, because that's what he wanted to do, always was a stander and walker) because I'd be making the bow worse. I read up on it and decided to let him walk if he wanted to--and he is fine, now four and a half, straight-legged, and able to walk miles at a stretch. |

You know, it's funny how none of our grandparents are all bowlegged! Weird. And they HAD to use cloth. Oh, and you get used to it. Now when I see a posie baby, they look like they are wearing a thong! So thin through the crotch, how on earth does anything stay in there! |

Thanks for everyone's replies! I've been obsessed with Diaper Swappers lately, trying to find a good price on some trim diapers. I am so overwhelmed by ALL the dipes out there. I decided I'm going to try making my own. There are lots of patterns out there, and I can play with the trimness. I just dont have tons of many to buy lots of dipes to find one I finally like!
I'm thinking ahead to fall, wondering how he's gonna fit into pants. I need it to be long enough in the crotch to accommodate CD, but not too long in the legs. I guess overalls are the best bet?
The whole CD thing get to be an addiction!
Thanks!

hey, i was just about to reply and reccomend that you try making your own...then i read your last post. it really is sooo easy. I learned to sew just to make some diapers because i hated the bulk in the dipes! I've tried sooo many different patterns. Rita's rump diaper is pretty good. It is a pocket but i don't make it one because i got tired of trying to stuff things into it that wouldn't fit. I really liked the goodness gracious diapers pattern..it's for fitteds and works pretty good! Just make sure your printer is on the right settings the patter will take several peices of paper. diapersewing.com is a great site too! After trying a millin different things and ordering special aplix i now make the Rita's rump diaper but sew up the back and no liner in it. I just lay in a ME liner since i have a bunch of those already!! Instead of using aplix or pins i sew some material onto the wings and crotch (i used a couple of layers of scrap material from a prefold that i turned into a fitted) that way i could use a Snappi and not have to worry about the aplix sticking to things in the washer and no pins! I like using flannel the best since it's nice and soft and poo seems to roll off a little easier (it can be cheap if you can find some used flannel sheets or used receiving blankets) I've also used one layer of towel and one layer of flannel..seems to be pretty absorbant but i you need an extra layer of something in the crotch if you use the snappi because it pokes through the layer of towel.
good luck!! |

Thanks so much for the good tips! I also visited diaperwewing.com, and I like the fitted dipes. She likes with one wiht velcro the best, but I'm not sure I'd like velcro on my diper. I was also thinking how i could use my snappi, instead of fooling with snaps or velcro. So, you said you sometimes use flannel and towel- do you sew them together, full size, or do you just use one layer of flannel, then sew a towel in the crotch area? I have several yards of flannel I bought at Joanns when it was 1.49/yd. I had some other crafts in mind, but changed my mind.
This might be a lot to ask, but would you be able to take a picture of some of the dipes you've made, maybe your favorites? That would be awesome!! My email is amberh@planters.net. It's so great to be able to get tips from someone who's done it, and can compare with ME! There are way too many dipes to choose form out there!
Thanks again,

Hey no problem at all..i think i have pics of all my diapers that i've made..or most of them..i have super slow internet so it might take me awhile but i'll try and get some pics to you today but it might not be until tomorrow. Yes the lady on diapersewing.com does like velcro or snaps. what i found with velcro is that the diaper has to fit perfect to work. I'd make a diaper then try it on my daughter the next day then have to readjust things and make a new one the next night until it was perfect..i finally got one i loved and made 3 or 4 of them but then by that time she grew out of them and couldn't use them. That's when i came up with the idea of sewing on strips of material that i could use the snappi with and went back to the Rita rump pocket diaper (without the pocket) that way it can be a one size fits most. fold down the front for little ones and the snappi keeps it snug and fitting great even if it isn't perfect!! You'll see in the pics but with the towelling i took the pattern and cut out peices from a towel and then used the same pattern to cut out peices of flannel...sewed in the elastic, sewed them together, turned and hmmm i was about to say topstitched but i'll have to go look i usually topstitch my dipes but i'm not sure if i did with that one. If i were to do that again i would put an extra layer in the crotch of maybe flannel or towel because of the snappi poking through. What i've been doing is just laying a homemade wipe (which is baby face cloth on one side and a cotton pattern on the other side) on the inside of the diaper to keep it from poking her. |

| I'm not going to be making diapers, as I'm hoping DS is nearly done with them, but I have to say that I like the idea of using a snappi for more adjustability. A friend of mine made her own diapers with aplix and I test-drove a few for her, and really did find that the fit was either right--or very wrong. When making the diaper is reduced to seams and elastic, with the benefit of not having to be a perfect fit--I start to think, hmm, maybe I could do that! Very interesting thread. |

Sounds awesome!! Thanks so much for taking the time to explain! OK, so let me get this straight- you sew together how many full size layers total? Sounded like more than 2, but I dont think you specified how many total layers. Then, you dont sew a soaker into the middle, you just lay a ME liner inside?
I'm going out of town tomorrow for 4 days, so I'll be anxious to catch up!
Thanks again annylynn! |

sorry..i guess it's a little hard to explain without being to show you. I tried to email you from my hotmail account but something is screwy with my internet and it wouldn't send the email. i'll try again in a few minutes but if you are on facebook, i have pics of most of my diapers i've made on there and you could take a look there. It's mostly pics of my old ones but it would be better than nothing. I went to take a picture of one of the new ones that i was trying to explain that didn't have any material in them that i used a ME liner in but they were all dirty...if it was just pee i probably would have taken it just to give you an idea but..it wasn't and i figured you wouldn't want a pic of that!!! okay so there are two different ones that i like the best right now. I think that's what is confusing...i've been talking about both. i'll try and explain a little better. okay so one diaper that i like probably the best (for now at least!) is a diaper that's 2 layers of flannel and that's it...the pattern i used is the RRP (rita rump pocket diaper, but i sew up the back instead of making a pocket diaper) instead of sewing in a soaker i just use a ME liner that i lay on top of it when i go to change her..i suppose you could always use a facecloth or a towel..whatever you have. This is the diaper that i sew on three strips of material that will work with a Snappi one on each wing and one down the middle of the crotch. I like this one the best because it would probably work from infant to toddler...you could just fold down the front or not. The other diaper that i had talked about is not my favourite (and not quite as trim) but more absorbant is one that i made from flannel and a towel. So if i were to make another of those i would cut two full sized pieces (one of each) and probably just another peice of material for just in the crotch area(i'm sorry i'm not sure what would be best for the inner layer since i haven't made any more of those kind yet another peice of flannel may do?) I found the Snappi poked through these ones a little so this is the one i lay a cloth wipe inside of it to keep her from getting poked. i used the Goodness gracious diaper pattern for this one..both patterns are free from the internet and i just printed them off (just make sure your printer settings are right for the goodness gracious one) oh i forgot to mention that i don't sew on strips of material on this one because the snappi works fine with the towel. i'll try and email you a few pics
i hope that explains it a little better |
