Question about stay dry diapers (charlie429)
Posted: 4:12:09 pm on 6/30/2009 Modified: Never

Hi there,
I am just beginning my cloth diapering journey and received my complete package late last week.  I ordered mostly cotton OS diapers with a few stay dry.  I really like the feel of the stay dry diapers and I'm considering exchanging my all my diapers for the stay dry.  For you experts out there, can you offer any insight as to whether this is a good idea?  And if you've used the stay dry diapers, have you been as happy with them as the regular cotton diapers?

Thanks in advance for any advice.  I appreciate it very much!

That's a link for a fairly recent discussion about this (if the link doesn't work, try going back a page or two, scanning the topics).

Basically, it just comes down to personal preference.  As you'll see from the previous post, I prefer the regular cotton because I like to have the stay-dry be optional (I use fleece); this becomes more relevant when you approach potty-training, and want your child to feel wet.  The stay-dry does resist staining much better than the cotton and is a bit easier to get the poop off (fleece offers these benefits, too, but is obviously an extra layer, for good or bad).

Whichever way you decide, there's no wrong answer.  ME products are excellent.  Congrats on making the decision to go with cloth--I feel that cloth really makes the diapering experience easier and also more enjoyable, as odd as that may sound (until you do it).

when i got my package i orderd half bamboo and half stay dry...i got all the liners stay dry and quite honestly i regreted it. They are nice since they don't stain as bad, the poo rolls off much easier but it's so much bulkier than the normal cotton and bamboo. I don't like the bulkiness but if you don't mind it then that's great! The only other thing is because the stay dry liner isn't an organic material it can hold onto bacteria more easily. I've been having a lot of trouble with diaper rashes and yeast rashes.

when I started out with motherease products I bought just one regular terry and one stay dry. I had other diapers at the time but wanted to test out motherease products so I just started with these two one-size to try. It took me a while to decide which I preferred but I definitely prefer the stay dry, and I think my baby does too! The stay dry are the diapers I always reach for first.

Motherease will take back diapers as long as they have not been washed or used. I know you probably need as many diapers as you ordered, but for the next week or two I would suggest trying a few of the regular terry along with the stay dry and see which you prefer. Maybe this means washing these few diapers every night.

I know a lot of folks on here like to put in a seperate fleece layer for the stay dry effect, but I prefer it as part of the diaper, it is just one less step for me to not have to think about!

As long as I line dry and only just fluff the diapers in the dryer for a few minutes on low heat I have no problems with smell. I find the dryer on a higher heat really brings out a smell, just my experience.

I hope this info will be helpful to you.

Thank you so much for the feedback.  I really appreciate it.  I hadn't thought about the potential for rashes so thanks for bringing that to my attention.  I've been using only a handful of my new diapers and rotating them to see which I prefer.  I've used disposables with my toddler for the past two years so the cotton terry is taking some getting used to for her.  I'm expecting another baby in a month so maybe she won't mind as much.  We'll see!  I'll keep rotating for another week and see which I prefer.

Thanks again for all the help.
