Which is better?  Wet or dry pails?  What are the advantages of each?  What do other people use?

Also, if we go dry pail..anyone recommend any 'deoderizing discs' or something that can be placed in pail to prevent odors?  Thanks!

I use a dry pail. It seems as if the majority of users on this forum anyway also use dry pails. I use 2 dry pails. One in the bathroom for sprayed off poo diapers and 1 in his bedroom for pee dipes. I chose dry pail for safety & ease of use. I wasn't comfortable having 2 pails with water in them sitting around in my house, especially with 1 being in my son's bedroom. Both pails have screw on lids but still....danger where it isn't needed if something else will work just as good. Ease of use, no dumping excess water & refilling daily with fresh. And I'm certain this is splitting straws but I didn't want my son's diapers sitting in a "toilet" kindof environment for days at a time. What a stinky cesspool that is!
I don't use deorderizing disks at all. I just pail the diapers until we get low and wash them. I spray out the pails with Bac-Out lime bio-kleen and let them sit overnight. Then I spray them out with our diaper sprayer and towel dry. We don't ever have a stinky issue and one of the pails is in my son's room right next to his bed. Some people sprinkle the pail with baking soda but I never have.

I also recomend a dry pail. I used to use a wet pail (actually used my washer as a wet pail - if you can make it work with your regular laundry this is definetly the easiest way to use a wet pail) but honestly it's just too much trouble for very little benefit. Some say that diapers kept wet set stains less but honestly between sunning the stains out, my dyed diapers and fleece liners, stains just weren't a big deal. Wet pails are really messy compared to dry pails...

As for the deo disc, I also never bothered (and I even have a pail with a slot for the disc). Never felt the need at all. My diapering 'center' was in the living room with the pail right next to the couch and as long as the cover was shut we never smelled a thing. Even once you opened the cover, it only smelled once the pail was getting full and it was time to wash anyway. If you do have trouble with odor, I'd recomend baking soda or a rag with a couple drops of essential oil on it before trying a deo disc (not easy to find locally so you have to order online and some of them smell pretty strong and 'chemically')

As for the pail itself, I just used a wet bag to line it and then washed the bag either with the diapers or other clothing. All I ever had to do was occasionally wipe down the inside of the pail and that's it.

Karen.

I wet pailed for about six months, and am so happy that I switched to a dry pail.  I really don't think that wet pail makes diapers stain less, at least not with the bf poo I was dealing with.  I tried to switch once but wasn't happy with the way the diapers smelled.  When I tried again, I added in the pre-rinse/wash that everyone recommends, and that was it.  *Much* easier, great results.
I use a mesh liner inside of a plastic pail, but that's really a function of when I had a front-loader with a very small opening (couldn't fit the pail in to tip it out).  I rinse out my pails and squirt down with vinegar.  Sometimes I'll put them out in the sun to get those great UV rays, but generally I don't bother.  As Karen said, really the only time you'll smell your pail is when the lid is up and it's getting to be wash time.

I've got to chime in and recommend dry pail...or even no-pail. I'm on my third mother-ease diapered baby and I've tried wet pail, dry pail and bags.
I think my sister uses the wet pail method, but I found it too smelly and cumbersome. If I'm being really good I'll put them in their pail, but generally they just wait in their bags til I'm ready to wash them. 5-6 small sandies or 3-5 one size per plastic bag. I've found they do not smell at all until I am emptying them into the washer, and even then it's really minimal with a bf baby.
I'll probably have to switch back to proper dry pailing soon though as we're running out of plastic bags! (Woohoo!)
