  yeast rash!?! (lori_limited)

My son is battling what seems to be a yeast rash (although I just did an online search and his is a more blistery rash, which could possibly be caused by bacteria?...sometimes it seems the more I know, the more I start to worry...). We have been treating with Clotrimaderm cream which has helped clear it up, but the rash is now back for the 3rd time. I’m not sure if the rash is worse this time (more blistery, more areas) or I am just getting tired of it and concerned about finding a final solution. I have made a dr.’s appointment, but it isn’t until later next week. So far I haven’t been treating the diapers because I thought I read on here that MOST people don’t need to treat their diapers for yeast (which now I’m not sure it even is...). Anyways, tonight I will wash the diapers with 20 drops of TTO, and vinegar in the rinse and continue this until beyond the time the rash disappears. It is supposed to be sunny and warm tomorrow (instead of all these scattered showers!), so I will hang them outside. It also sounds to me like I should make a wipes solution with 2cups water and 5 drops of TTO to use until this is cleared up. I figure that the above things will at least not hurt anything and will hopefully start to help. Does this regime sound right to anyone? Any other suggestions?
Thanks again!

Bummer mama!
I finally boiled my dipes(last resort, mind you!) as my son just could not shake his rash for 2 plus months. Poor guy! I stripped, I washed, rinsed, hung in the sun, vinegar, TTO, dawn dish soaped, plain hot water. Nothing would get rid of it permanently. He was on an RX creme for yeast and we were making no headway. So I broke down and boiled them. All 15 liners, 26 Sandy's, and all his fleece liners and cloth wipes. They were all just really angry I guess! I used a huge stock pot and boiled 4 at a time for 5 minutes each. I could get 3 sets of 4 per stock pot of water. It took about an hour total but wasn't that bad really. Then I hot washed no detergent heavy duty cycle & drier dried on medium.
And the rash finally went away. I wouldn't recommend boiling as a preventative measure as I bet it's hard on the elastic. But it was either that or switching to posies. That would break my heart! But my son's bum is more important than what I "want".
My issue wasn't buildup because no bubbles ever came out when I tried stripping or washing with no detergent or even boiling! I thought it was going to be gross but it just affirmed that I was doing a good job in my washing routine. It was just once that yeast gets going, it's very resistant to stop.
But boiling is what finally did it for us. That and lots of nakey time. It was easier to do nakey time overnight because the pee can be contained to a towel placed under the sheet. And that's 12 hours! So it also helped.

What you read about not always needing to treat the diapers may well have been one of my posts. I really can't say how often parents will need to treat the diapers, I really don't know. I do know from personal experience with my first dd that it's not always necessary. However I also know that yeast can be really really tough and theoretically can survive normal hot water washes (only being killed by extremely high temperatures or anti-fungal agents).

The tea tree oil in the wash and the wipes solution is a great start. The sun is great, although a hot dryer may also be helpful. Keep treating his skin and the diapers and that may well do the trick. I would reserve the big guns like bleach or boiling the diapers for true desperation as both can be very hard on the fabric (or snaps/elastics in the case of boiling). Just a tip, if you do end up boiling them, make sure they move around a little to prevent a snap from say resting against the side/bottom of the pot and getting too hot (extreme heat can cause the snap to break).

Karen.

My DS had a yeast rash that lasted more than a month--we were at the Dr once a week! We went from otc yeast creams through 3 different prescription yeast creams. Every time, it would get better for 5 days, then explode again. The last time, the Dr. had us start using barrier cream (like Boudreaux's) every time we changed his diaper (when not using the med. cream). That finally seemed to do it.

He still keeps a slightly irritated bottom. I am very conscientious about changing his diaper as soon as I realize it's dirty, but now he's been diagnosed with eczema, I wonder if that's part of his problem. We still use the barrier cream with every change (I've made fleece liners to protect the dipes). He'll still even have small "explosions" of red bumps/irritation, but they seem to be after the nastier poops.

Good luck!

ahh the yeast rashes..what a pain. I was battling this for quite awhile with my daughter. Unfortunately hot washes and a hot drier probably won't help since yeast loves heat and will thrive in it. I'm not sure about the tea tree oil but one of the only things that kills yeast is Grapefruit seed extract (i got it at a health food store) a couple of drops of that it the diaper load and in a wipe solution if you want. They say that boiling the diapers can make the snaps break so that would be your last resort. I also had to use canestin cream whenever i saw a little dot start to keep it under control. My poor little girl kept getting it over and over. Most doctors will just tell you to use disposables. I asked a doctor about it and he said that at this age it's usually a contact thing..then it hit me..i bathed with my girls all the time and have problems with yeast myself..once i stopped bathing with her it never came back..just something to think about in case you bathe with him...i think that's more common maybe with little girls?? dunno? Good luck

I tried everything, just like nakedbabytoes, but my
2-month-old daughter's rash ended up being an eczema-like (but not eczema) reaction to milk I was drinking and she was getting through breastmilk. I don't know why it took 2 months to figure out, but I saw two doctors, two pharmacists, and spoke to a naturopath.  We all assumed it was yeast, but it wasn't.  I also found a great (and super-expensive!) diaper cream called Cammomile Zinc from St Francis Herb Farm.  Good luck!

Ahhh, the diaper rash.   This is the reason we are using ME diapers in the first place.  After many painful diaper changes, and some scarring on her bottom b/c the rash was so bad, it occurred to me that perhaps it wasn't just sensitive skin or the wrong diaper cream (I have tried them ALL), but the poop that was burning her.  DD hasn't had any dairy (no milk, cheese, yogurt--nothing) for two months.  I have also read that a gluten intolerance can cause acidic/rash causing poops.  DD's bottom is so cute and white now I can't believe it.  I have been using Weleda cream or Balmex powder on her bottom when there's a little redness.  I don't know if they are good for the diapers, but I am hoping so.  So, in a nutshell, maybe you might want to explore diet (yours, if he's EBF) and see if it makes any difference.  Good luck!  p.s.  DD also spends at least part of the day naked now too.  I find that in the morning after cleaning her from her night time diaper is a good time.  I just let her walk around while I'm fixing her breakfast and then put a prefold in the the highchair for her to sit on while she eats.
