I am planning to go camping with my family (4 kids) in a couple weeks for 4 nights.  I was hoping to use cloth, but now am getting cold feet and thinking about disposibles because I am scared I will be too busy with camping things to handle the cloth diapers.  I have a 7 month old and a 2.5 year old who is potty trained except he asks for a cloth diaper to poop in and he wears diapers at night and nap.  We will be at a campground with washing machines so I could do a load of diapers.

I guess I need some encouragement and to hear others who have done this with no problems.  Cloth is more work, but the thought of leaving bags of garbage makes me think I can do the cloth.

thanks,
julie

We just returned from a camping trip. We went for 3 nights, I used cloth since I only wash diapers every 3 days anyway. There was no laundry faucility where we were but there also was no trash cans, you had to take your trash with you, so I figured if I have to take them home with me anyway I would just use cloth. It really wasn't that big of a deal. I don't find that cloth is more work, I think it is more work when there is a blowout with disposables, which has never happen to me when using ME.

We are getting ready to go to the beach and I have decided to use disposable only because it is for 6 nghts and the closest laundry faucility is on the other side of town, and I know my kids don't want to sit in a laundymat anyway. Plus I don't have to bring anything home with me. I am sure we will have lots of other stuff that will be filling up that extra space.

Have fun!

I would love to see some stories of people who have made cloth work for camping as well! We are going camping for some long weekends as well (3-4 nights at a time), and personally I haven’t done a lot of travelling for more than a night with cloth yet. I guess you’d have to bring any dirty diapers from home so they aren’t sitting too long...
Anyways, I was looking into G-diapers for another purpose, and then it sort of dawned on me that this might be my happy medium for camping. I wasn’t sure how to make cloth work/convenient for camping, but was also dreading the thought of all of those disposables in the landfill. G-diapers have disposable inserts that decompose in about 3 months and don’t contain plastic etc. So no washing (except covers) and not as much garbage guilt. You can read more about them on their site (www.gdiapers.com). I have some Bummis Super Whisper Wraps that we aren’t using (because we love the airflows), and someone suggested that using the G-diaper inserts would probably work in a wrap like this, or if you have the Rikki wraps, or some other velcro cover (something fitted enough to hold the insert in place). This type of wrap could let you use the G-diapers without actually investing in the G-pants. I was able to purchase the inserts at a local health food store (in Ontario). I haven’t actually tried the combination of these 2 yet, but I am planning to give it a try at home first.

I did cloth when camping last year. If I recall correctly I think we did disposables at night, just to avoid really smelly diapers but the rest of the time was cloth. Now, we spent a lot of time swimming (pool and local waterpark) so there were less diapers than usual, but then we had two in diapers... I ended up more/less washing the diapers by hand while we were there (just used the outside sick they had by the washrooms) - can't recall why exactly though??? Man, my memory of that trip is pretty bad now that I think about it. Anyway, it was fine and I didn't regret it at all. I even took a picture of the cloth diapers hanging on the tent poles! Kinda cute with all the colors (mine were dyed)!

The G diapers are also a great option, I totally second that!

We just went camping a few weeks ago with a 2 yrs old anda 7 weeks old baby and we used disposables...  Bad idea!  It was fine for my 2 yrs old, but every time our newborn pooped, poop would go up the back or sides of the diapers I had to change her whole outfit!!  It turned out to be more laundry than if I had used my cloth diapers!!

One tip that the previous poster just reminded of... If you do use disposables for whatever reason but are afraid of blowouts like that, try using a cloth diaper cover over top of the disposable. The better quality elastic and having a second 'barrier' really helps keep poop where it belongs! You'll probably have to wash out poopy covers but those are easier to wash than clothing or car seats (I had to do that 2-3 times on a road trip with first when she was a baby - washing out a car seat cover in the bathtub of a motel is NOT fun I'll tell you!).

My decision about whether to use cloth or disposables usually comes down to space and how they will be stored/carried.  For instance, when we travelled from overseas, we'd use disposables for the travel, because the logistics of carrying enough diapers (and also carrying dirty diapers) in carry-on for 24 hours of travelling just didn't make sense.  But I then packed diapers in our suitcase for staying at people's houses.  That was after one disastrous trip for which I used disposables--and spent three weeks washing bf poo off of everything!  I started using a Rikki over a disposable for the airplane part, and that really did help.
If I won't have access to washing facilities for a period longer than 4 days, I go with disposables.  They exist for a reason, and sometimes they make sense.  If I have a place to put the dirties and washing capabilities, then I much prefer cloth.  And DH will change a cloth diaper, but is very reluctant to get involved with a disposable!

We went for a 2 weeks camping trip out east and I used cloth.  I made sure the sites we went to had laundry facilities.  Had my wet bag to hold the diapers in and a bucket to rinse the poo diapers before throwing them into the wet bag.  It worked great.

Well, I did it!!!  We used cloth diapers during the day for my 7 month old and 2.5 year old (potty trained, but asks for diaper to poop in).  It went just fine!  I ended up doing laundry half way through out 5 days away as the campground had a washing machine.  I can't say the washer worked super well, but the diapers didn't smell and seemed clean.

i would do it again in a heartbeat ... it felt good to being using cloth while camping, instead of creating bags of garbage.
