  Need Help (crickalina)

Hi I'm new to this forum.  I have a question about my sons diapers.  Lately when he has a bm It's out both sides of the diaper.  It stays in the cover tho.  Is this normal?  is their a diff. way to fold them to prevent this (very messy getting the cover off without covering his legs.)  Do i need a bigger diaper (there seems to be plenty of room)?
Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks
Crystal

Hello,

I'm certainly not one of the most experienced moms on this forum, so I'm sure someone else will be able to help you better. But it may be useful to know how old and how big your son is, what kind of diaper you are using, and whether or not there was a big change in his diet lately. I know that during blueberry season, my son's BM gets a lot softer and tends to get all over the cover. I don't think it has anything to do with the fit of the diaper, just the texture of the BM (sorry, too much info, I know). We just wash covers more often to keep up...

Sorry I can't help any more than that, but I'm sure someone else will be able to! Good luck.

Thanks for your input.  He is 10 months old but a big guy 20 lbs 31 inches.  I'm using 4x8x4 prefolds.  I generally twist them and use a snappi to hold together.  The change in his diet is his determination to stop breast feeding.  So he's eating all the same table foods, but more of them.  He's also getting about 4 oz. of juice a day and whatever water he wants since he figured out how to use his sippy cup good.

It might help to experiment with different types of folds and see of another type would work better at holding stuff in the dipe itself before making it to the cover.
I'd say search around like YouTube & the like for videos & have fun becoming an oragami queen!
Ahhh....solids! Fun fun fun.

Be careful as your son may just be in the midst of a classic nursing strike!  Ten months is young to self wean.  If a breastfeeding relationship is something you wish to continue, be sure to keep offering the breast, especially at night!  Good luck!

Yeah, prefolds are tough in terms of keeping poop off the cover. It may not be true for every user all the time, but generally speaking poop on the cover is pretty normal for using prefolds. That said, different folds can help a lot so I'd second the suggestion to experiment a bit.

From the sounds of your first post, you're using pull-on covers, is that right? You mention it's messy getting the cover off without spreading poop on his legs so that was my first thought... Anyway, if that's right, maybe try a velcro or snap cover. It wouldn't help in terms of keeping poop inside the diaper, but at least it would make changing a little less messy.

Also, the juice may not helping in terms of stool consistancy (juice is known to cause loose stools). You could try maybe watering that down (say half/half), reduce the amount or even cut it out completly if you can. Sub with water, breastmilk (either at the source or in a cup), formula or a small amount of whole milk. Just a thought...

Karen.
