question bamboo not bamboo (ljpuls)
Posted: 3:06:34 pm on 8/6/2009 Modified: Never

Has anyone ordered the bamboo OS diapers?  My friends got a sample pack and nowhere on the label does it actually say bamboo.  It is rayon and polyester, I think.  Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue.  I wouldn't want to pay extra from something that says it is bamboo and it isn't.

Hello,

This question has been brought up on this forum before, the bamboo diapers all say rayon/polyester now (I think at first they said bamboo then it was changed). I seem to remember that Mother Ease's response, when asked, was that the diapers are made with bamboo fiber, but because of the chemical process used to process the fiber, it has to be called rayon (and it is mixed with a bit of polyester to make it stronger). Or something like that. I know the question was brought up again more recently by someone saying that rayon by definition could not be bamboo, but once again I can't remember exactly why. I think it would be worth asking Mother Ease if you have any doubts...

I know my "answer" doesn't answer much... Hopefully someone has better memory than me or can find the old posts for more information!

ME addresed this a while back, sorry I just don't have time to search through past threads. I know it was about 6 months ago though, maybe a little more?

I remember it was something to do with the fact that bamboo itself wasn't technically a fabric, so it had to be classified as rayon for legal reasons. I looked it up and rayon is considered a semi-synthetic fabric because it's made from natural materials (usually wood) but it's highly chemically processed. Makes perfect sense to me that bamboo fabric would be classified the same way that a 'wood' fabric is, bamboo as a plant is closer in looks/feel to wood than it is to cotton for example.

I'd contact ME to get more detailed info, they don't really monitor this board that closely so they aren't likely to answer this thread themselves.

Karen.

I just emailed ME directly this afternoon. I'll post their response when I receive it. In the meantime, I'm looking back through past threads so if I find their previous response, I'll put that up too.

I do happen to have some time as Baby is still on the inside. I'll take advantage of that while I can!

I remember reading somewhere that the fabric has to be treated with a certain process that requires it to be labeled as a synthetic, but the fabric is in fact bamboo.  I can't recall if it was printed in a pamphlet I received with the bamboo Sandy's I ordered or if it was under the FAQ on the website.

It must have been included with my order... I just checked the FAQ on the site and wasn't able to find it!

There is a thread about this topic on diaperswappers.com

Apparently, US laws are cracking down on companies who are labeling their fabrics as bamboo. Rayon is the proper term...specifically rayon made from bamboo.
