  Idea for mourning moms? (Fanfreluche)

Last night, DH was reading the fall classes schedule from the local community center when he exclaimed "Ha! They have a Cloth Diapers 101 class". Yup... It's a 90 minutes workshop given twice this semester, and I remember seeing it advertised last semester as well.

Granted, I live in Vancouver, BC (Canada), where CDs are almost becoming mainstream. Well, that may be a bit exaggerated, but the proportion of people using cloth here is way higher than everywhere else I've heard about. To give you an idea, we met 3 nice couples in our prenatal classes that we stayed in touch with over the last 2 years, and all 4 of our babies are cloth diapered (and that was decided before we met). And I've met at least a dozen other CDing families since I had my baby.

All that to say that the idea may not take off in other parts of the world, but if some of you mamas are looking for something to do that would keep them connected with CDing, why not propose such a workshop to your local community center? I could totally see Karen doing this. I'm sure if there is a local CD store, they would be more than happy to lend you some stock in exchange for a mention during the class. And we all know how useful it is, when you first consider CDing, to meet with experienced moms who have used them and can tell you about your options, reassure you about laundry routines and show you the actual diapers. I think it would be really interesting! We all do it with our friends or neighbors, why not make it official?

If anyone is curious, here is the description for the class:

Considering cloth diapers but don't know where to start? Join Karen from New & Green Baby Co. for an informative workshop on cloth diapering. Learn about the environmental, health and financial benefits of cloth diapering, what you need to start up and common concerns. Learn how easy it is to put your baby in cloth diapers and see the newest diapers available including those made with hemp and bamboo fibers. www.newandgreen.com

Love it!  I am certainly one of those mourning Mamas!  There are several stores here in Ottawa that already offer CD workshops monthly so I don't know if it is the right move for me to make.  It is a move I would wholly embrace, but probably not a good one!

Perhaps it is the large, urban setting, but here in Ottawa CDing is also gaining popularity.  I know many families who use them, but I suppose it only makes sense as I generally have friends with similar parenting ideas.  I do still see many other poor little babies in skimpy paper undies and feel badly for them!!!

Great idea!  Out local midwife advocacy group is hosting a similar session in October.  It was a cute name, I just can't remember it right now.  Something like "Diapering 101: the truth about poop" or "Diapering: The Good, the Bad, and the Stinky."  I'm going to suggest they try offering it at the community centre drop-in for parents and kids.  (Ontarians - it's part the Early Years Centres)

Great idea for sure! I'm also in the Ottawa area and I've also heard about the classes given by one of the local stores. But then I may be far enough away that people around here might be more tempted to come to something a little closer. Plus I am bilingual and I don't know if the store gives classes in French, so that's a thought too.... Hmmmm..... Maybe I could introduce myself to the store owner and offer to give a version of the class in French???? I've even considered applying to work there part-time or maybe even volunteer in some way.... Food for thought for sure, especially as my youngest will be in school full-time next year...

I am working on a cloth diaper related project though. Have been for a long time actually, it got put on the back burner for a while because we were building a house (just moved in, that's why I was MIA for a while, no net connection till yesterday) and that project demanded quite a bit of my time. But I'm hoping in a few weeks that things will settle down and I perhaps I can really put more energy into it. When I get more advanced I'm going to post on here for some help from all my knowledgeable cloth friends!!

Karen.

Karen, you should totally offer those classes in French! By the way, I am from Québec and I work as a professional translator, so if you ever need help translating to French material linked to cloth diapering, I would love to give you a hand! I was just thinking about how I had never met anyone who was cloth diapered before moving out West, and I think Québec in general could definitely use some good information on cloth diapering!

Oh, you might regret that offer of translation! LOL! I'm pretty good at translating I think but I could surely use someone professional (and that knows cloth) to look over anything I write. My sister-in-law was very close to a translation degree (missing just one class to graduate when she quit) but then she doesn't know cloth so...

I'm a Franco-Ontarian living in QC now, we were in Gatineau up until a couple weeks ago but have recently moved just north of there so maybe we'd be far enough away to not impede on the store in Ottawa. Of course we're now in a more rural area so ressources are much more lacking and the populations is spread out more..... Definetly need to give this more thought later on. Right now there's soooo much stuff going on with the house (and school for the older two) that my head is already spinning!!

Karen.
