I am using cloth diapers for the first time on my third child. I came to mother ease after being referred by a friend.
I bought one size cotton organic diapers and the rikki wrap covers. 3 out of 4 times I tried using the diapers they leaked through (once with a liner, once without). The first two times I realized I had the wrong snaps done on the diaper. I fixed that problem, but then it still leaked. HELP, any advice is appreciated. I want so badly to use cloth diapers, but I am about to give up!
My daughter is 3 weeks old and weighs 9 pounds, if that makes a difference.
Thanks in advance, Suzanne |

| hello there. just a suggestion. have you washed your diapers a few times before the first use? also i think, but don't quote me on this, that the riki wraps are more suited to the sandy's diapers. i would suggest switching to air flows. my ds is 6 months old and i made the switch to cloth a week and a half ago. i am using the one size with the air flow covers and he has not had a leak even once. also, it is normal for urine to leak to the outside of a cloth diaper. the cover will keep your daughter's clothes dry. |

I only washed them once as the instructions said..so I will try washing them a few more times. I actually talked to customer support at mother ease and they told me the only difference between the wraps was the kind of closure you preferred, she didn't tell me that one cover was more for a certain kind of diaper...hmmm.
Thanks for your reply. |

Like ME said, the kind of cover doesn't make a difference. Some people have more luck with one or the other depending on the build of the baby, but at 3 weeks it shouldn't make a difference.
I would definitely wash a few more times if they are new diapers (if used, how long have they been used for?). Also, make sure the diaper is very well tucked into the cover and nothing comes out, even the tag, as that would wick moisture onto the clothing. In the same vein, make sure no clothing is creeping into the cover (I guess that could happen if the cover is too loose).
At 3 weeks, you shouldn't need a liner and you shouldn't have leaks as there is so much diaper for such a small baby, it's really surprising. Where and when does it leak exactly? When it leaks, is the diaper completely soaked everywhere, or is it just coming out in one spot but the rest of the diaper is dry? have you tried putting the cover tighter or looser to see if it made a difference? Have you used fabric softener (it can cause the diapers to repel liquid instead of absorb it).
I'm really fishing here, not sure what could cause it but maybe if you give us a bit more detail something will stand out. |

hey there. the only time i've ever had a leak is when the cover isnt COMPLETELY covering the diaper. maybe along the legs, or at the top. the dipe and cover could still be "loose", but the dipe always has to be totally covered. never have i had a total leak problem. i use AF's though. I've tried Rikkis and I liked them ok, but i did not like the loud sound of the velcro- and it scared baby right out of drowsiness!
hope it helps. good luck, and congrats!

The first time I used the OS, I had a leak. Argh! I thought, but discovered that the tag from the diaper had caused wicking up the back. If you are getting leg leaks, as PPs have suggested, that's likely from either the diaper poking out, or some clothing getting in. At present, though, I second (or third?) the idea that it's probably the need for washing. New diapers should be washed 3-4 times on hot with a little detergent to get rid of the oils. Those oils can actually cause the diapers to repel moisture at first, so while they will absorb, some pee could actually run over the surface. Sometimes there's a little learning curve with cloth, but once you figure it out, you should find that they are far more reliable than disposables. Good luck, and keep the questions coming! |
