  Olive Oil Ok on diapers (littleflower)

When 1st baby came, midwives recommended rubbing olive oil on baby's bottom so that mecomium is easier to remove. It worked really well, but we were using disposables those first couple of weeks.  

Do you think it will be ok to do the same thing with the olive oil now that I will be using cloth?  I'll be using mostly ME sandys and prefolds with a couple BGOS thrown in.

Hello,

I have no idea if it would be a problem to use olive oil on your diapers (someone else may know), but if you don't get a black or white answer, you could try using flushable liners in the diapers. They would probably protect the diaper a bit from the meconium, as it's not as runny as BF poop is, and most of the oil would stay on the liner as opposed to the diaper. Or use fleece liners (a lot of ME users make them from cheap fleece to serve as a stay-dry barrier in the diapers) and that way if the oil builds up, you will only have the liners to replace, not the diapers.

Are you still dealing with meconium? As soon as you're done with the meconium, EBF poo actually wipes off quite easily so you may find you don't need the oil. Joanna

Baby hasn't arrived yet! I'm asking so I know when the times comes...countdown is on. Today is 36 weeks!

Oh maybe I wasn't clear...I am 36 weeks pregnant with 2nd baby now. With the first baby, I didn't use cloth until baby after the mecomium had passed. But, I plan on CDing from day one this time!

My midwife also suggested olive oil for my baby's dry skin and bum.  We did not have any problems at all.  You only need a drop or two as it spreads so smoothly.  The diapers went on to be used for 4 years so I would say that there was no ill effect!  

The laundering process removed it all.  It is the same as with a baby once solid food becomes a part of the diet.  The poop from solids contains oils (and other gunk!) that washes away just as cleanly.  Same thing.

If you were pouring on tons I guess it could become a problem, as sometimes oils don't come out well the first time even in a hot wash, but as PP said, you wouldn't be using that much.  I wouldn't worry about it, personally, but you can put your mind at ease by using some kind of liner.

Ya, for the few days that you'll be using it, it really shouldn't be much of an issue. In fact, it's a good idea- I'll have to remember it for next time...

I used olive oil for the first 3 months with both sandy's and MEOS and had no problems.  Even after the meconium I found it made cleaning bums easier because the poo would just slide off.
