My daughter is 9.5 months old and I have used cloth since she was born. I love the One size with the Air Flow covers, but now we have started to get leaks at the legs and waist. My daughter is about 23lbs and 30 inches tall, so I did buy the Rikki Large Wrap to try and see if this was a cover issue (was using the M/L Air Flow). The wrap caused a rash at her waist and legs, plus the leaks still occurred.I don't know what to do except just keep changing her outfits when they are wet. I don't get the leaks when she wears dresses and loose pants, or just the cover. Obviously, I need to fix this issue before the weather gets colder because she can't have bare legs when the snow flies!! Any suggestions would be welcome.

A few suggestions, hopefully some of these may help:
1) make sure the one size is snapped rather tightly, if it is loose around the leg holes and waist, moisture may escape onto clothes 2) Use a snap-in liner 3) Change diaper frequently 4) use babylegs legwarmers with the loose pants and dresses for winter 5) watch out for compression leaks - leaking from sitting on a wet diaper, in a car seat for example 6) if the AF cover is causing rashes, try other types of covers. I use fleece covers (stacinator and sugar peas work well) - very easy to launder. But you need to have a very absorbent diaper underneath and be in the habit of changing frequently. 7) if all else fails, try stripping the diapers in the wash machine using very hot water and a squirt of blue dawn dish soap. Rinse rinse rinse until no tiny bubbles bubble up to the surface in the rinse.
Hope these suggestions will give you a good starting point. Good luck!! |

Since you mention that the leaks don't happen in dresses or loose pants then it's almost surely a case of clothing creeping into the cover and wicking moisture onto the rest of her clothing. Do you use onesies that may be getting snug and creeping into the cover? Or maybe the cover is too loose and leaving gaps for clothing to sneak into? Or maybe just the clothing is getting too tight?
HTH, Karen.

I find that moisture wicks onto my DD clothing when she wears onsies (especially Carters brand as they are wider in the groin area). Diapers may also be heavily saturated, therefore the urine needs to go somewhere! I'd suggest narrower onsies and looser pants, and change more often

Some heavily-wetting babies need the snap-in liner with every OS. My DS#1 needed it from about the time we stopped folding it down, to when I stopped breastfeeding him, about 17 months or so. If I didn't put that liner in there, I had to change him every hour or so. I really think, though, that to some extent it was more about volume per pee rather than overall volume, i.e. he peed a lot at one time so needed the extra absorbancy immediately. You might have a combination of factors, like a heavy-wetter combined with onesies nearby.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I am going to sell the rikki covers and buy some Large air flows. The velcro seems to be too irritating on her skin ( red rashy marks on legs and belly), plus she has now discovered that she can undo velcro! My daughter seems to be on the long side (31 inches) with chubby thighs, so I need the rise longer and more room in the leg area. Do you think the next air flow willbe too big? She isn't 27lbs yet, but nearly (around 24lbs). I appreciate all the advice. Thanks in advance,

I use the lg airflow on my 23 lb 2 yr old, and it works great.

I used both the M/L and L AF from about 20 lbs without any trouble at all; although I found the M/L a useful size for my first son's build, there wasn't much point with my second son, so I eventually just sold mine when he was maybe 24 lbs or so. The L are a very versatile size, and although they may be a bit big-looking around 20 lbs, they usually work just dandy.

I had this trouble during the winter. When I'd put tight fitting pjs or long johns on dd she would leak. As soon as I started using a sleeper (without a waist band) as the second layer the leaks stopped.
