using posies for a week? (Fire Dancer)

i really do not want to do this, but we are going out of town to a friend's house for a week and my dh wants to use disposables. he is justifying it because of the eas of traveling with them vs cloth, the fact that our friends had well water and still have rust in their pipes, the fact that the husband of my friend will gripe at the use of cloth dipes, etc. what would you do in this situation? i really do not want to use disposables. i told my dh about the lo's dry skin from using them and he just blew it off saying, use baby lotion when that happens."

I personally use disposables when traveling, but then, my baby's skin doesn't seem to suffer from the switch... If you have to go that route, one week will most likely not be the end of the world for your son. Of course, if you really feel strongly about using disposables, you could always see if there is a laundromat that would be available not too far to wash your diapers. I do not know what the effect of well water would be, other moms on the forum may be better able to address that. But I do feel bad about imposing my laundry schedule in another person's busy household, and that's one of the reasons I use disposables when traveling, especially to relatives who have children of their own and tons of laundry to do.

If you have to use disposables and if you often had blowouts in disposables, you can try using an ME cover on top of the disposable to catch any potential leak. I haven't tried but I heard it works well. It won't help your baby's skin, though...

Well, generally speaking travelling with cloth isn't nearly as bad as people imagine. In many ways it can be even more convenient since cloth (especially ME) is wayyyy more reliable than disposables. I'll never forget taking a roadtrip with my now 10 year old (she was about 9 months at the time). Still pretty much exclusively breastfed (she refused solids of any kind) she had major explosive poops and the disposables just didn't hold them in. I had to hand wash her car seat (with cover that's almost impossible to remove, especially with no access to tools) in the bathtub of a motel **3** times!!! That's saying nothing of the multiple outfits of course!!

Now, all that said, I do have to admit that your hubby has a point with the rusty pipes and especially the hesitant friends. Now stains don't matter to everyone but if the rust in the pipes stains your diapers then that's very difficult if not impossible to remove. Of course, I have to ask myself how bad it can be if they're washing their own clothes in there...

The friends willingness to have you wash cloth dipes is another story though, unfortunetly if it's true there's not much to be done about it. If you're close enough that you're sure that it wouldn't be an ackward conversation or that they'd feel obligated to say yes, then you could always politely ask. That way you're not assuming without really knowing what they think. You can assure them there's no risk of cross-contamination and maybe even offer to run an empty load with bleach afterwards if they really are scared. But if they're still hesitant then I'm afraid your only option is to respect their wishes even if their reasons aren't logical or fact-based.

There are other options though. First you could always take the diapers to a laundrymat. Actually this might be a good way of testing the waters with the friends. Just contact them and ask if there's a laundrymat nearby, when they ask why just explain that you're using cloth diapers now and would like a place to wash them. They'll either pinch their nose and point you in the right direction or insist that using their washer is perfectly fine. Washing in a laundrymat isn't the ideal in convenience but it's doable. Depending how many diapers you have by then you'd probably only have to wash once or twice at most.

You could also use disposables for the first part of the trip and then maybe 2-3 days before you leave you can start using the cloth again and just wash them when you get home.

Could you maybe get some eco-friendly disposables to help ease your conscience and maybe your lo's skin? Another tip as well is to use a cloth diaper cover over top of disposables to help keep blowouts inside - much easier to wash out a poopy cover than a whole poopy outift! Also, if you do use cloth part of the time, you could maybe use disposables at night and while in route, maybe as a compromise with dh?

Anyway, good luck whatever you do! Have fun on the trip!

Karen.

my friend actually used cloth on her autistic daughter for a while and finally gave up because of her husband's griping. her husband is just like mine when it comes to cloth diapers. i know she would not mind me washing them, but he probably would. using a cover over the disposables is a good idea. i might even pick up some diaper liners at the store to protect his skin from the junk in the disposables.   i am getting 13 more dipes today so i will have 25. i launder these 12 that i have every other day. so that is a very good idea, i will bring the new ones to my friends and put him in the cloth for the last part of the trip and launder when i get home. do they actually sell diaper liners at the store? also they will protect his skin yes?

oh yes. i can never forget those nasty blowouts that my ds had as well. got all over his carseat cover. i do not know why people say that disposables are leakproof because they are not. i have never ever had a blowout with my ME dipes and when he was in disposables, we were having blowouts about every other day or so.

I'm going through the same thing- only used cloth on my 7 mo, thought i'd like to buy a pack of posies for a weekend trip. poo is starting to smell bad! anyway, went to the store, and could not go through with it. $9.99 for a pack of 26, i had to put them down last minute. also, got to thinking about leaks. funny, isnt it! never thought i'd be so passionate about cloth!

if you do go with using some disposables i'd suggest not using pampers..especially since your son wouldn't be used to them. I loved the fit of pampers and used them for the first 7 months of my daughters life until i switched to cloth. My poor little girl coughed for the first 7 months of her life..the doctor told me that babies cough and not to worry about it but i was starting to think she must have my asthma..always coughing day and night...then i noticed as i was slowly switching that she wouldn't cough in cloth...pampers are sooo highly perfumed that she couldn't handle it...soooo happy to find that one out! We still use disposables at night and when we are out and use Teddy's Choice supremes (they are canadian though..not sure if your in canada)..good luck

I second the comment about Pampers.  They actually stink to me and sometime give me problems with breathing.  Granted, I have allergies, but why in the world must diapers smell so strongly?!

I use 'sposies when traveling, and my babies usually get diaper rash from them.  I make sure to carry lots of diaper cream and use it every time I change them.  Carrying cloth simply isn't practical for us, unfortunately.

when we go to the in-laws cottage for the weekend, I use disposable. We don't havea washing machine there and I don't have enough diapers to last two children 3 days...don't beat your self up about using disposables in these cases... if you have washing facilities, than sure, do the CDs..but if not, just consider it a break.

I have only been using my MEOS diapers for a few weeks, but I already love them!  We had to take an overnight trip with our 3 week old daughter recently, and we decided to use disposables because we didn't know where we'd be able to wash them on the 4 hour car trip.  We were so sad to see how red and printed her bottom became from the disposables.  Also, we took our daughter to a wedding reception and as I was holding her, I experienced the first blow-out of her young life.  The poop came out the leg hole and got all over!  My husband and I cursed disposables for the rest of the weekend.  We plan to be more creative on our next trip so we can find a way to make the cloth work.

oh yes, the comments about the pampers, we used them exclusively for the first 3 months or so. then we switched to huggies because me and my son had issues from the pampers. my eyes would itch and water and i would cough.  those are not good for an asthmatic mama who was doing most of the diaper changes. he would always sneeze during diaper changes then as well. his bottom would always be red and imprinted as well because of the leg gussets. but when we were using disposables on that trip, i hated every second of it. i was using an af cover over the disposables partly to catch the poop and partly to cover up the disposable because i did not want to be reminded that he was in them. we were using the cheepy parents choice walmart diapers. when i ran out of those, my friend gave me white cloud discontinued walmart ones. those were the worst. his urine would actually leak through to the outside of those diapers. the only posative thing about those ones is that they did not make my son smell like urine unlike every other disposable that i have tried. so when the leak happened a second time, my hubby went out and bought huggies pure and natural. they still make your baby smell like urine when he pees, but in my opinion, are the best disposable diaper out there due to being rustle free, having a totally cloth outer cover and inner lining with padding so that the gel stuff is not incontact with baby's skin, and being totally silent like cloth. they also do not leak. but james, surprisingly was very accomodating to me when i decided to use cloth part of the time. so from now on, when we use disposables on a trip, i am just going to skip all the others and go with the pure and naturals. oh yes, and another good thing about those ones is that they keep baby's diaper area cool as well.
