sorry everyone, i have to retype this over again due to a very unstable wireless connection. this wireless dongle is having constant conflicts with my laptop.

i just received my batch of bamboos and stay dries yesterday. i washed the whole batch only once. i washed the cotton only once before putting him in them as well and this has never happened even once with them. he was in a stay dry all through the night and low and behold when he wakes up this morning, the whole outside of the diaper from front to back, including the binding over the elastic was soaked, the cover was soaked, and his onesie (size 6-9 months) was soaked as well. nothing about the way i put on his diapers has changed. the tags on both dipe and cover were tucked in, there was no diaper peaking out of the cover and the cover was done the same way that i usually do it (first snap on each leg and second snap on each side of the waist fastened. i am pretty much at a loss. i am wondering if this is because of the sizing of the onesie that he had on? it was somewhat, but not extremely tight in the diaper area. there was no clothing sneaking inside the diaper or cover either. this has never happened ever since i put him into cloth. it has always been leak free until now. i usually put an 18 month size onesie on him but wanted to try the 6-9 month on over his bamboo because of bamboos trimmer fit. i obviously did not take the onesie off when i changed him into a SD dipe for bed.

It's probably because they were only washed once. You may have gotten away with it with the cotton for whatever reason but really all new diapers should be washed at least 2-4 times before use (more for unbleached diapers, less for white). Wash them a couple more times and it'll probably be fine. Maybe with the first batch the diapers had already gotten washed a few times before you ventured into nighttime use?

If you still get a leak after a couple more washes maybe consider how much absorbancy you've got in the diaper. Was there a liner in it? If not consider putting one in. If there was then maybe consider a second one.

I agree with Karen that you most likely need the extra washes. It could also be that your little one sleeps a bit longer at night without a change so you need more absorbency now than even a few weeks ago. If the diaper was completely saturated, then it's not a problem with clothing but with absorbency.

Of course, your DH may have an issue with the look of a nighttime diaper with a booster on your baby. You will definitely need to go with bigger clothing! But keep in mind that it bothers parents a lot more than babies. My DS is two now, he sleeps with 3 boosters in his OS diaper, he has a HUGE bum! It even makes him walk a bit funny when he gets up in the morning. But despite the fact that he can easily talk in long sentences, he has never ever complained about it even once. The only time he made any comment about his diaper was when we were using disposables and he asked for his "big" diapers back.

So try those two things and I suspect you'll have success! Good luck.

actually the first ever cd that i put on him was not washed before use and he wore it successfully through the night without a leak. besides wicking to the binding over the elastic. those kept his clothes dry. i think it might be due to the fact that this new batch is unbleached and the cotton ones were bleached fabric. as soon as i got my first batch of cloth, he has never even had a disposable touch his butt. but maybe that is the case with the washes because when i rinced a bamboo dipe in the sink this morning, i felt some kind of oil on it. so maybe that is what is going on. maybe i should just stick to my regular cottones and retire these ones until i get them totally washed. will it be ok to throw these in the washer with used ones? or should these unused ones be in a load on their own? also is it just me? or is the poop easier to get off of bamboo vs cotton? with the cotton, i have to scrub with my fingertips to get the poop out and with the bamboo, as soon as it touches the water, the poop comes out with very very minimal effort. also we will be using disposables for a week long trip. i really hope that my ds does not protest too much. is it due to the fact that they hurt your son's skin that he asked for the big dipes back?

I'm not sure about washing the new diapers with the old ones, I assume it would be fine, although if there is a lot of oil there is always a possibility that the oil could deposit itself on the old ones. Although you would think it would wash away. You could always give Mother-Ease a call and ask, they have really good customer service and they should be open as it is a week day.

If you don't want to do too many extra washes, you can always keep the new bamboo diapers for daytime and use only cotton at night or when you know you'll be longer between changes until the bamboo ones have been washed for a few times.

I have never tried anything but bamboo, so I can't compare... As for my little one asking for the "big diapers", I have never noticed that the disposable ones hurt his skin, I suspect it's a comfort thing as the fabric diapers don't have to be quite as snug on him to work (he has complained a few times that the disposables were "too tight", and also maybe just moral comfort as he is used to the fabric diapers a lot more. But it does prove that he doesn't mind his ME diapers!

Bleached makes a pretty big difference over unbleached or bamboo. The unbleached or bamboo fiber has only been through a limited processing to remove leaves/twings etc... The white/bleached fiber is put through a chemical bath to whiten the fiber, this breaks down and removes a lot of the oil before it's ever made into a fabric. It's still recomended to wash a couple of times first but a large part of that is probably just to remove any residual manufacturing chemicals or dusts. Unbleached, hemp and bamboo can take up to 10 washes before all the oils are removed (obviously you don't have to wash that often before using them, but it can take that long before they reach full absorbancy).

In theory you shouldn't wash new diapers (especially unbleached cotton, hemp and bamboo) with older diapers. The oils can redeposit on the other diapers reducing their absorbancy. I've had this happen myself and my pockets were very badly affected, leaking like crazy! Now, I did say in theory because you're washing only fitteds and they are much less prone to repelling (when the fleece becomes essentially waterproof from a build-up of some sort) than pockets. In your case I wouldn't worry about it too much since they've already been washed once and you're only dealing with fitteds so it's probably not going to be an issue.

If you want to avoid extra washes I like Fanfreluche's suggestion of limiting the new diapers to daytime use when you can change more frequently.

Karen.
