exclamation Dryer / Fabric Softner Question (mratzlaff78)

I know this is probably a weird question...but I am a cloth diapering mom (used them with my 1st child who is now 4 yr old) and I know the havoc that fabric softener does to diapers.  Well I am expecting my second child in Feb of 2010 and in Kansas, if anyone knows anything about Kansas, there is going to be a time frame that I cannot dry them on the line.  Well, my question is does anyone know of a way or what type of cleaners to use so that I can "clean" out the residue from my dryer from years of fabric softener on clothes and dyer sheets? Just a note: we used the dryer balls now instead of fabric softner and they work so much better!  Thanks for all the help!

If you're not using fabric softener anymore then I don't think you have anything to worry about. Fabric softener build-up inside a dryer is one of those hypothetical things that may cause some people problems in extreme cases but I don't think it's very common. And certainly after using the dryer a few times without the softener, the vast majority of the residue would probably have been wiped off.

If you really want to be sure I think you can probably just wipe it down with a damp cloth, I don't think you need any special cleaners or anything like that.

There's certainly nothing wrong with drying in the dryer as much as you want but if you do want to line dry all the time you could maybe get a indoor drying rack. It'll take longer of course but it would allow you to line dry all year round if that's what you prefer.

HTH,
Karen.

I second the indoor drying rack.  We don't even have an outdoor one so I use it all year round.  In the winter the diapers dry faster because the air is so dry, in my house anyway.  If I hang them before I go to bed, they're dry the the morning.

Hello! I also live in Kansas and I line dry outside as much as I can. When winter comes or it is way too windy, I just hang them on my toddler's super playard to dry. The one size dry overnight, but the Sandy's bamboo take 2 days.

Thank you all for your quick responses. After reading what each of you had to say I thought to myself "duh...Melissa, why didnt I think of that" I am not sure why it seems like perfect sense 'after' reading what you guys wrote!  haha

I think that I am just overly cautious about the whole fabric softner thing because I watch two babies that are both cloth diapered.  Both families use Bum Genius Pocket Diapers but the diapers are not the same with each family.  One family has perfect working, absorbing, odorless diapers.  Whereas the other family the diapers dont absorb unrine and when the do they smell to high heavens, they have a mildew smell and they are dingy and they just plain dont work.  Come to find out the mom was washing them with Dreft and fabric softner to soften them up.  Plus the daddy was using A & D ointment.  I feel so bad for them, but I told them that they have to stop using those products on their diapers cause it will cause many problems (like it already has).  She has tried several stripping methods but nothing is working.  All the urine wicks out the sides or the top of the diap.

So....that is or should I say "was" my fear of my dryer.  I think that I am safe though

Thanks again.
Melissa
